ALSA Drivers Crashed

I’m having problems with my ALSA Sound Drivers. They were working perfectly, then they quit. OSS seems to work, but with only one application at a time. So for a temp fix, I switched over all of my main media stuff (wine, vlc, system sound) to OSS.

I don’t know where to start with this problem. It seemed to happen shortly after my failed attempt to install vbox. (which failed all 3 times. Went with VMWARE instead). Any clues?

All help is greatly appriciated,

Adelsin

ps. tried to search… found nothing.

please help

Please provide details about what is happening (what does “then they quit” mean?)

Perhaps you could also provide more information as to your software/operating-system setup? Please provide:
A. the output of:
rpm -qa | grep oss
B. the output URL provided by the two diagnostic scripts from the audio troubleshooting guide:

alsa-oss-1.0.15-48.1

update your alsa drivers…

That’s right, you have
!!ALSA Version
!!------------
Driver version: 1.0.16rc2
Library version: 1.0.16
Utilities version: 1.0.16

while the latest version is 1.0.18

Follow these instructionsto update Alsa.

I tried to update using Yast2 Rep manager. No option for the updated version. I ran alsaconf and now I can get sound via alsa… however, I still can’t get sound from one than one application at a time.

Ex: If I have wine running, I can’t listen to music or listen to youtube. If I have music running first, I can’t hear wine audio.

Pulseaudio maybe?

The alsa api allows multiple audio applications to play sound at the same time. Try changing the output audio mode of your multimedia players to use the alsa api.
