All-in-one printers for Linux

Hi all. I am about to buy a new all-in-one printer but need a little advise based on your experiences.
I have been using a HP OfficeJet 6110 for years on Linux without problems but now it’s time for something new. I was considering HP OfficeJet 6500 but the reviews aren’t that convincing, like the printer starts up very slow and is very loud. I would like something quite and fast that works well in a small Linux network.
I have also been looking at Brother but I have no previous experience with this brand.
What are your experiences?

I have always used HP Printers and they always just work, perfectly.

If the one you read reviews on wasn’t good then get a different HP, they make hundreds of different printers, you aren’t limited to the one you read about.

I recently bought a HP j4680 for under a 100 bucks, it certainly isn’t top of the line but it works perfectly, is quite, can scan multiple documents via the doc feeder, or flat bed scan, does faxes, and of course it prints.

;)My hp and me

I have also a Hewlett Packard printer-fax-scanner.
He is called hp Officejet Pro 7590 and has an energy star and has been helping me until now for about 2-3 years.

He needs a bit time to start and test himself and sometimes the device for feeding the paper to scan / copy papers drops to the ground if I open the scanner. Also I had sometimes to open him and look for stuck papers instead of him giving me printed papers. And I have to tell him every time again that I prefer a qualified fax report with a image of the fist fax page on it (by pressing about 5-10 buttons).

But mostly hi did what I had been betting him, also in linux (openSUSE and Ubuntu). He is connected with my ‘wirefull’ network (LAN) via my router and the router to my laptop via wireless network (WLAN) - so I can take to my all-in-one from my notebook via WLAN, too.
He has also four different tanks for different color ink and I can use XXL tanks (88XL). That may save some money if printing much.

If I wants him so, he can be fast. But sometimes he stumbles if he gets to fast hi is making crumbled paper and me unhappy - so I try to rush him not to much.

He is able copy to paper or scan to USB flash device/stick without any computer on.

If the next one would be a ink-printer I will think of hp, too. (For laser printers I may think about samsung. )

Good luck in the hardware jungle!

Thanks for the quick reply. Like they said, never change a running system. I think I will buy another HP

Good idea. I’ve been happy with HP’s support for Linux, the Linux
versions of the HP packages run better than the Windows packages.

Had to download the beta for next release from HP’s website, when I bought my F4580, update came about 2 weeks afterwards. All functionality, incl. wireless printing and scanning over the network work as they should.

You are right about that because I read that Windows 7 doesn’t support OfficeJet 6500, which runs very well on Linux. I am thinking of buying this one even though some people wrote that it’s too loud. Iam going to buy the wireless version.

Im using an Epson TX115. Works flawlessly with Avasys drivers. Just needs the typical workaround for 64 bit drivers. Copying drivers from lib64/cups to lib/cups.

I ended purchasing an HP Photo Smart Premium All-In-One C309a printer. The rather long thread (while I debated what to do) is here: HP WLAN capable inkjet printers under Linux ? - openSUSE Forums

I find it works well for me under Linux. It also works well under WinXP, albeit it takes a LOT longer to configure under Win-XP than Linux. My boss has same printer and uses it to print from MacIntosh.

I am using a brother all in one network printer (model mfc-5890cn) and works nicely. The brother site has a good howto for linux distros.

I would just like to say thank you all for the feedback. I bought the HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless and I have to say that it was a real good buy. It was the easiest installaton of a printer that I ever made. I did almost nothing to get it up and running on openSuse 11.3 and it’s not as loud as some people wrote. The only little problem is that it takes quite a while to start up.
