Alacarte (Main Menu) Does Not Save Settings

I just recently upgraded (new install) to 13.1 from 12.1, and I have to say, I like the new changes. There is, however, one major annoyance. I realize it’s a Gnome bug, and I’ll report it there, but I’m hoping someone has a workaround to this problem. The problem is, Alacarte (the Main Menu application) does not save any changes I make to the applications menu - namely, I can’t edit a launcher’s properties nor can I add new launchers. The changes simply don’t show up. Does anyone know how I can manually add to Gnome’s application menu without having to go through Alacarte?

I think probably the thing you should do is diagnose why alacarte isn’t
saving changes - I just tried it here on a freshly installed 13.1 system,
and it worked properly.

How did you do your upgrade?

I have a separate home partition that I reused, but the OS itself was a fresh install.

Apparently this problem hit Ubuntu as well. There, someone was able to install the gnome-panel package which fixed the problem. Unfortunately, OpenSuse doesn’t have that package in its repositories.

I might try creating a new user account to see if it works there. It wouldn’t surprise me if there was something stale in my home directory somewhere.
