When installing a database application on a machine, its initial state is stopped.

Verify it’s state (whether it’s running) with

systemctl status mysql.service

If it’s stopped, then start it with

systemctl start mysql.service

Then verify the status of your mysql.service again.
If it’s not running, you will see a relevant snippet from the journal which might say what the problem is, if you aren’t able to resolve then you can post the entire “status” output in a post.

Best practices is that you should also run the script that secures mysql, but may not be necessary for your akonadi.

Your MySQL server was not running before, If you are running the above commands in one of the openSUSE enhanced terminals like Konsole, LXterminal, Qterminal, et al then you should have seen highlighted in the following which I didn’t place in CODE tags so you can see the highlight

But, apparently there is more that’s necessary for running Akonadi.
It appears that an Akonadi configuration isn’t specifying your local MySQL server (likely by name or address, and that would generally also require configuring your MySQL server security to allow only local machine calls or network sockets).

How did you install Akonadi, and are you following any guides for setup and use?

I’m trying to understand if you installed packages from a source that should have automatically set up everything for you or if the way you’re installing requires plenty of manual configuration.

Are you sure you are not mixing the standard KDE stuff with wolfi’s???

You should use totally one or the other. Mixing things can cause problems

Do a full vendor change to the wolfi repo if that is what you want to use

Why do you use these repos ? Stick to the stock packages and you won’t have these issues.

Just for the records - I had a similar problem yesterday with a Tumbleweed installation (as of 2017-02-04) : akonadictl crashed permanently, and mysql was not able to start.
Solution was mor a shot in the dark, but successful: I deleted content of /tmp completely and rebootet. All was working afterwards. Seems some temporary file had a hickup
