didn’t make any sense to me. I tried googling “Linux. darknes” but nothing helpful appeared. What is “darknes”? How do I boot into it? Is “darknes” somewhere in the GRUB menu?

Have a look at the instructions in No longer able to reach gnome login screen after latest update - #17 by sebix (the thread was linked above)
What is “black screen of death” in the title of this thread?
I think, we mean both the same…
collegue fixed the system after the dup. So no subsequent new release/dup yet.
Oh, you mean “darkness”. The incorrect spelling threw me off.
I have a similar issue, no blinking cursor though. dup updated me to kernel 6.16.9 which had the issue, booting into the previous kernel 6.16.8 fixed it for me.
Solution: Keep an eye on 1250513 – [Build 20250924] Upgrades from 15.x seem to get the config for gdm / dynamic user generation wrong , wait for it to get RESOLVED then run sudo zypper dup.
I’m also having problems with newer kernels. Any of the kernels I’ve tried from 16.7 on up through the recent 17.0 almost consistently crash at boot looking like it’s failing in udev-worker and/or probing for intel_oc_wdt. On the rare occasions where it does not crash and hang, it makes it partway through the boot, pauses for about 2 minutes, then continues with an error “dracut-initqueue: timed out while waiting for udev queue to empty”. On those occasions, it will usually hang partway through the shutdown process.
I ended up having to go all the way back to kernel 6.15.8 before everything worked.
