Hi
I have a problem. After yesterdays update the machine freezes constantly. It did sometimes before the update as well, now its really an issue, since it will most often do it right away; normally as soon as i open Dolphin or Amarok. Luckily firefox does not seem to ‘irritate’ it.
My guess is it could be the driver update to geforce that was included…?
Any help would be welcome

Is the NVIDIA driver installed? If not, install the NVIDIA driver.

Yes it installed; i just tried to upload a screenshot of yast, but then it froze.

Guess you could roll it back to the previous kernel, see if it all comes good, and we can go from there.

Yes yesterday there was an update on my machine. If you look at the picture, the text was **** no. 2 from above, nvdia graphics driver kernel module for GeForce 6xxx and newer GPUs
perhaps the one below as well.
And yes there was also a kernel update.
So you suggest rolling back…?

Now i have been here long enough to know that you very likely are right; nevertheless my machine had an update yesterday, and as it install that it shows what was installed in a box, one of the items was something like ‘graphics driver kernel module for GeForce 6xxx and newer GPUs’
Why is the driver listed in my yast photo not on the list in your photo…?
But does we not get the same updates simultaneously+

I come to think of something else, which may or may not be relevant; after I installed 12.1 i couldn’t boot into it, then I was advised to write nomodeset in the dialogue box in start up (you I think, gave me that advise?) Then it worked great.
I wonder if the updates have changed that.
Perhaps a kernel update automatically triggers a re-install of the graphical driver when using the drivers available from within YaST (the nvidia source). I use the nvidia script and have to re-install (rebuild the kernel module) the graphical driver with every kernel upgrade.

We do get the same updates, though sometimes the mirror we are using might mean we get them at slightly different times.

Are you saying, adding nomodeset now makes the problem go away, as it seems unlikely to me.
I don’t use nomodest on mine. Installing the nvidia driver seems to change the setting here to ‘yes’ automatically

You shouldn’t need nomodeset in the boot arguments as well. I don’t.
I double checked my log, and no nvidia packages were installed/re-installed.
So just to be clear; in your view it is the kernel my machine does not work well with, and you suggest rolling it back, right?

One more question, will my machine not then update to it next time around?
And added to that; where would I check the log from the update, - it might be useful?
In /var/log/zypp/history
You will have to scroll down toward the end where the last updates log will be, and just see if it did do some update to anything nvidia.
If you roll back, the next update will update it unless you lock the kernel as ‘Protected-Do not Modify’
So just to be clear; in your view it is the kernel my machine does not work well with, and you suggest rolling it back, right?
Well you can establish if the updated kernel is the problem, because if you roll back and all is well…
I looked into the kernel; I was unsure which beneath to chose, the one right beneath had a different name than the one now in use.
(added to that it asked for the dvd, is that as it should be?)

anyway I have found and checked my 12.1 dvd and will try to roll back to the kernel version below as you suggest.
Right, did. That one it had to download, it was not already there… is that cool…?
Anyway, done is done and I will reboot…
That seems cool, 
however I am not sure it solved the problem, - everytime it froze I have first in a glimpse seen a thin blue line on the screen, - just a fraction of a second, no longer, - its already done that a few times. (in an older version of suse I had the same problem, and funny enough the samme glimpse of a line in a fraction of a second )
Now i will test it a bit, but I am not sure it was the solution.
