Everytime i insert the password login form is shown again
If i put the wrong password nothing happens

Obviously i can log in in terminal

Any suggestion?
any check i can do?

Ciao

Dear all,

I have the same problem after the last zypper up.

It is possible to get a KDE desktop as root (sudo startx) but not as a normal user.

Already tried many things, such as https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/518066-I-can-t-login-into-graphic-mode/page2

People suggested that it might be due to the graphics drivers? I would downgrade Tumbleweed if it was possible.

Try running

sudo pam-config --add --systemd

See here for more information:
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2016-06/msg00113.html

If it works as root, it’s rather not a graphic driver issue. Of course root does use the same graphic driver, so should have the same problems…

This rather sounds like a permission issue, like it is caused by the above-mentioned problem, which should be fixed by running that pam-config command.

It might also be a problem with the user account/settings/some user files, so if the above doesn’t help try to create a fresh user account and see if you can login there.

Indeed, it works with a new user as non-root. Which file permissions may need to be changed so the old account works again?

This however does not work (already tried this from another thread) :
sudo pam-config --add --systemd

Well, so far that’s only guessing.

Please post the file ~/.xsession-errors-:0 (from the affected user account, you should be able to get to the file as root), that should hopefully give clues to what’s wrong.

If it’s a problem with the user settings, I’d suggest trying to delete ~/.config/kwinrc at first.

This however does not work (already tried this from another thread) :
sudo pam-config --add --systemd

Yes, if that would have been your problem, it would have affected all user accounts (except root).

Unfortunately deleting ~/.config/kwinrc did not help, ~/.xsession-errors-:0 and ~/.xsession-errors are empty

Then the session must crash very early…

Can you login if you choose IceWM at the login screen?
Try to delete the file ~/.Xauthority then, maybe this has wrong permissions which would cause a graphical login to fail right at the start.

Now I managed to log in again by using the failsafe option, so it works again.

I still deleted the ~/.Xauthority file, not sure if this helped or not.

Thank you anyway, problem solved.

Failsafe where?
At the boot menu, or at the login screen?

I still deleted the ~/.Xauthority file, not sure if this helped or not.

If you could login using failsafe, this probably was not the problem.

Thank you anyway, problem solved.

So it works now in “normal” mode too?

Hi i tried it and it worked i was able to login again (also after a reboot)

thank you very much:)

Every time I booted into the Konsole without a GUI, typing exit however, brought me back to the graphical login screen (I was not aware that this would be available). From there, the fail- safe option was available.

Now just checked: I chose KDEPlasma instead of [FONT=Verdana]failsafe and this works too again,.

Thank you.

Hello all,

Long time listener first time caller

so i have the same issue, decided to install openSuse Leap, installation went through without a hitch. However on login screen i can’t log in. I have tried all options of interface. I also tried the command above and nothing.

Also not so good with Linux environment. Any help is appreciated.

It is not clear this is the same problem you should start a new thread and give more detail about the problem. It may be a graphics driver problem so tell us about your graphics. Was this an upgrade from a previous version if so which

Thanks i was just revising the explanation was extremely poor.

Is a fresh install, of Leap, i also realized that this is a tumbleweed thread.
I installed and setup KDE
my video card is Asus V1232
AMD CPU

was reading this thread since is a Leap 42.1 thread
