With respect to doing the zypper -n update - will that work without a working name server?

If “zypper -n update” fails you may replace the link /etc/resolve.conf by a file of the same path containing the following as a temporary workaround. Refer to the documentation of your router for its addresses.

nameserver 192.168.178.1 
nameserver fd00::xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx
