After ten steps check process, still can't play dvd.

I have been working and searching the forum for a solution to dvds not playing on my hp dv2000 laptop running openSUSE 11.2, 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop
Your help would be most welcomed, thanks.

Hello,

What has worked for me:

Make sure the package libdvdcss is installed from the VLan/VideoLan repository. Make sure NOTHING else from this repository is installed. Install all the other stuff you want from the Packman repository. Double check and Triple check that you’ve got the latest stuff from packman. Do NOT use zypper; use Yast … really!

Thanks Oxala.

Some dvds will work now, Braveheart will but The Net will not.

I did use zypper to install mostly.

I think maybe am I missing some codecs.

It’s possible some DVD’s might not work.
Try installing k9copy and or handbrake - see if either of those will rip the DVD

Thanks cat.
I will try ripping one.

These are the codecs loaded.
rpm -qa |grep codec
libxine1-codecs-1.1.18.1-1.pm.37.2.x86_64
opensuse-codecs-installer-10.3.1-71.1.noarch

libavcodec52-0.5.22648svn-0.pm.1.1.x86_64

Hee hee,

I should have replied to your original post, “you should have used one-click, it’s a one step process to getting here”.

:smiley:

I notice that the dvds that will not play can not be seen by ‘device notifier’ either.
Is this a dud post?? Or does is spark an ‘ahh ha’ for someone.

k9copy can not see the dvd cat.

If these are original, commercial/retail DVD’s, some things to consider…

Are they all the same region code.
My Lenovo R61 shipped to me with the Optical drive not set to any region and would only read some DVD’s. I had to re-install Windows and set the region to the one I use. And now it works. But actually all my DVD’s were the same region anyway.

In a terminal try this: mplayer dvdnav://

Hi Cat,
Thanks so much for the help.

There are two outputs from mplayer dvdnav:// command. The first is with a dvd in the drive that would not plan and the second is with a dvd in the drive that did play.

‘Brave Heart’ did not play.

bonjour

linux-apvb:/home/xen # brctl show
bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
eth0 8000.001c2340d6b5 no peth0
vif1.0
vif2.0

linux-nzuw:~ # ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3E:57:CE:DE

linux-apvb:/home/stage # ifconfig

DEVICE=‘eth0’
#BOOTPROTO=‘static’
BOOTPROTO=‘dhcp’
IPADDR=‘192.168.1.2’
NETMASK=‘255.255.255.0’
NETWORK=‘192.168.1.0’
BROADCAST=‘192.168.1.255’
ONBOOT=‘yes’
METRIC=‘10’
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=‘yes’
PEERDNS=‘yes’
NETMASK=‘255.255.255.0’

Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide

Hi Cat,

It took me a little time to go back thru multi-media RFIG. I deleted all the modules and reloaded them. I am still in the same fix as before, some will play and some want. Those that play are all Paramount, and the other producers will not.

Paramount does not have a problem but TriStar, WB, Covenant, etc will not play.

Thanks for all your help, you are the best.

Please post result of

Thanks Cat, here it is:

Update mplayer that is an old version the latest offering is 1.0rc4_r31930-1.pm.3.1 not 1.0rc2_r30099-2.pm.6.2 and try again…

Hi Cat, I ran the zapper dup command and it found none.

Hi FeatherMonkey, where do we find the lastest version of mplayer. The one I loaded is on packman and I can’t get it from there. Where one one me safe to download for openSUSE??

New happening and I do not know why but a dvd that I could not play I can now.
Kaffein and mplayer will play it but they both take about 1.5 minutes to load it.
Kaffein is fine, but mplayer does not get the menu it just starts playing the one the producers are explaining how they made it.

Thanks for both your help,

Carl

Its from Packman-Mplayer something seems amiss with your repos or mirrors.

You need to remove the repo you have for packman, it’s out of date.
Add this one:
Index of /suse/11.3

Then update everything in packman
