After nvidia g05 (470.182.03) update curser twinkles

After update of nvidia this am, curser twinkles unstably, whenever left unattended, i.e., hand off. Upon moving it
functions normally until left unattended when it starts oscillating and blinking again. New this am. Think it was nvidia g05 update as seems to be only likely cause. Anyone see same?

nvidia geforce gtx 1050 ti card. Maybe try downgrade later. Quite annoying.

@tckosvic or upgrade to the G06 series?

Did upgrade/change to g06 series of nvidia drivers. Thus far looks like problem solved. Thanks for pointer!

Flickering cursor returned after moving to g06 nvidia drivers. Flickering cursor not solved!

In investigating further, I have noticed that in the “nvidia x server graphics app”, the X Server Display Configuration tab now shows two monitors. One monitor is labeled Dell U2419HX (as before) and the other monitor is labeled “Prime Display”. I have only one monitor and previously this display app only showed the Dell monitor.

Perhaps this is the cause of the flickering mouse cursor. Upon clicking on “primary display” there is a message that “Prime displays cannot be controlled by nvidia-settings …”

Have no idea about “prime display” appearance. Any ideas appreciated.

This is an optimus setup?

Not an optimus which I think of as a laptop. It is full sized PC that I assembled myself about 6 years ago. i7 chip. asus x99 deluxe motherboard. If any other info is needed let me know.

@tckosvic can you post the output from;

/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 "VGA|Display|3D"
base) tom@mydesktop:~> /sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -EA3 "VGA|Display|3D"
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti] [10de:1c82] (rev a1)
        Subsystem: eVga.com. Corp. Device [3842:6253]
        Kernel driver in use: nvidia
        Kernel modules: nouveau
(base) tom@mydesktop:~>

This does not look abnormal to me but I am far from a knowledgeable on this subject.
NVidia x server appostill shows 2 monitors. I did not mention that the 2nd monitor “prime display” has forward slashing lines through the image equispaced.

thanks, tom kosvic

@tckosvic that’s in the Layout view (X server Display Configuration)?

yes, the two display images are in the X server Display Configuration. I am not sure how to include a screen capture to display it…

For a test, I might try going back to the g05 older version of nvidia to see if the two images goes away.
BUT, if the two images does not indicate a problem, I can live with it

@tckosvic did you create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf or something down in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d with a second display?

Not intentionally did I create anything.
Nano reports no file for /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
It reports that /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d is a directory. Looking in that directory, the file 10-quirks.conf was changed on 2023-03-23. All the other files are a couple of years old. I have no idea what this file does.

thanks, tom kosvc

@tckosvic it may need one, you can use nvidia-settings to create one and just save as your user in you $HOME directory to inspect, it may indicate the issue…

You could then call it 20-nvidia.conf and copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d (as root user).

The nvidia gui generate a conf file that I put into /home. Here is contents:

Does this show any problem? File is named: ".nvidia-settings-rc " Should I put this into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d (as root user)?

@tckosvic no that’s the settings for nvidia-settings.

This, see the "Save to X Configuration File;

I reinstalled all of the g06 nvidia files and restarted. The nvidia server gui now shows only 1 display and it properly names it as my dell. I think all is well. Thus far cursor is stable.

Had some excitement though. I tried renaming config/settings file from nvidia gui and putting it into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d (as root user) as suggested. Upon reboot computer was only in text mode. I got graphics started with startx after a few reboots but system was only 1024x760 and 1920x1080 was not even available in desktop settings of 3 desktops or through xrandr. Grasping at straws I did the reinstall of all of the nvidia g06 packages. Restart was back to the expected.

I am back to normal and I have not seen the cursor flickering (made editing a text line really difficult) thus far.
I am so nervous every time I touch nvidia. Over 15 years or so of opensuse, I have had to reinstall many many times but most all of the times I was involved with nvidia. Reinstalling is a week long task to get back to what I had.

thanks, tom kosvic

@tckosvic my first Nvidia install was in 2005 (SaX even) :wink: never had an issue since then, aside from the occasional kernel rollback…

I admit my knowledge of computer graphics is terrible. Your experiences were probably due to being smarter and having more savvy with graphics. Glad you had your successes with nvidia.
My hand trembles every time I touch nvidia stuff.

thanks for the help, tom kosvic

@dth2 a great tool :grin: the joy of seeing the nvidia logo pop up on the screen…
