After installing new DE it wont appear at log in menu

Today I installed XFCE and when logging out and going to the menu at the login screen it was not there. This heppened to me before to when trying to install Cinnamon.

It probably requires that the login manager (“gdm” or “kdm”) be restarted. Easiest is to reboot and see if the new entry is then available.

Did not work.

Which Display manager are you using? KDM, GDM, LightDM, or…

And how have you installed XFCE? Did you install the rpm included in openSUSE, did you compile from source, did you download packages from elsewhere?

For a session to appear in the login menu, you need a .desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions/. The installation routine should take care of that.
If that is missing, you can try to create your own (take an existing one as template).

KDM also looks in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/sessions/ , don’t know about others.

Please, this is about computers and casual talking is not not helping. Allways be as exact as possible.

Saying “Today I installed XFCE” might sound nice, but it fact it lacks all crucial information (except the word “today” maybe). You should say things like:
I went into YaST > Software > Softwarte Manager, there I use the VIew button to go into Patterns and from there a checked the XCFE pattern for installation. That is, when you did it that way. But as allways in UNix/Linux there are many ways to achive results, in most cases even many you never heard of. Thus, we not being clairvoyant, you should explain things.

I installed it from the 1 click thing from here: software.opensuse.org:
I have KDM for the login manager.

Thus you installed only the XFCE window manager and not the complete XFCE desktop is my guess.

But your question points to the fact that you complain you can not choose the XFCE desktop. Well, that would explain it. You do not have the desktop, only the window manager.

When you want the desktop, then do so as I showed as a possibility in my post above. That will give you 30-40 packages installed (I did not realy count them).

When you only want the window manager, then you should explain what you want to do with it before we can try to help you.
