After Installation-OpenSUSE 12.1 Won’t Boot OS ?

Hi,

Been waiting a long time for a good Linux distro.
( been running Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 7 HP 64Bit for over a year )
I tried openSUSE 12.1 64Bit in VirtualBox and thought it was exellent)

I installed openSUSE 12.1 64Bit DVD (KDE version) to a brand new HDD
and the installation appears to be successful,
but on subsequent boots the OS does not load?

I had to use “Fail Safe” option (install would hang just after stage 1 of 2 of installation).
Again, the OS successfully installs (both stage 1 and 2) but after it won’t boot the OS.

Here are screenshots of the 2 errors I get when booting:

My computer specs are the following:

  • Dell XPS 420 desktop computer system
  • Stock Dell XPS 420 motherboard
  • Intel Core2Extreme 4-core 3.0GHz CPU
  • 8GB DDR2 RAM
  • nVidia GeForce GTS 450 PCIexpress 1GB GDDR5
  • Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 1
  • Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB HDD w/64MB RAM (brand new)
  • Plextor DVD/CD burner drive

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Jesse

I see it’s pointing to the second HD and the first partition
Is that correct?

Sure that Hard drive is OK?? Also I note that you are getting a text based grub menu. That is not normal.

I think, when you get a grub error and if the user has pressed any key to continue…
Yet get the text grub screen seen

Maybe so. but the disk read error seems to indicate a hardware problem. How is that drive formatted? Can the OP boot to a Linux CD and show us

fdisk -l
that is a lower case L not a one
