after fresh install - no knetowkrmanager is running: how to switch beteween ifup & kneworkmanager?

hello dear linux-experts,

first of all - a happy new year to all of you;)

just have installed opensuse version 13.2 on a Akoya P 6512 15" with AMD Athlon X2 P320, 2,10 GHz, 4 GB
during the installation i skipped the steps of configuring the network. I thougth that i can do this now.

but at the moment the wlan does not work at all.

i runned a script to test the condtions and the confiurations.

cf. http://www.linux-tips-and-tricks.de/de/schnellstart/

btw: have found some issues with the network configuration—…

i allways struggle with ifup and knetowkrmanager … At the moment i only can run the notebook with the ethernet wire connected. No wlan is possible

what can i do now;

see some issues that i found out!

!!! CND0490E: no Accesspoint with the SSID on the Interface wlp4s0 found
!!! CND0380E: no WLANs at Interface wlp4s0 found. the hardware and drivers are not well configured
what do you suggest

here the newest output of the above mentioned script collectDATA -

questions that come up to my mind:

what can i do now.

a. what do i have to change & choose with ifup and the knetworkmanager?
b. how can i setup the knetworkmanager and subesquently
c. what needs to be done with the both chips the wlanchips?

many thanks for any and all help

The same as always: run YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings->Global Options.
But on 13.2 you can only choose between wicked service and NetworkManager (or no network at all).

b. how can i setup the knetworkmanager and subesquently

knetworkmanager is a KDE3 application and basically dead since years.
KDE4’s networkmanagement plasmoid should be part of the system tray by default, especially on a fresh installation.
If not, check that “plasma-nm” is installed. And try to right-click on the small up-arrow, choose “System Tray Settings” and enable it there.

And it would have been a good idea to state which desktop environment you are using. As you mention knetworkmanager I’m guessing that it is KDE4. Is this correct?

c. what needs to be done with the both chips the wlanchips?

AFAICT a driver is loaded for your WLAN device, so it should work.
Please post the output of “iwconfig” and “rfkill list” (you might have to install the latter first though).

hello dear Wolfi,

KDE is correct
and the plasma-things can ge seen in the ssytem tray - they are visible!
even the one for the networkmanagement…

first of all many many thanks for the quick reply. Great to hear from you.

i just have read your posting - there were many many tipps in it - and i think i have to read it five times to get all the hints.

here just the output for the two commands

linux-a9sq:/home/martin # iwconfig

          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:on

enp5s0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

linux-a9sq:/home/martin # rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no
linux-a9sq:/home/martin #

hope they may help.

and now i am going to read carefully through the ideas and hints that you have posted.

i come back later the evening.

greetings

dilbert

Looks like it’s working.

linux-a9sq:/home/martin # rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no
linux-a9sq:/home/martin #

But it is soft-blocked, i.e. disabled.
Try to run “rfkill unblock 0” and you should be able to connect.

hello again

well we have the following information:

04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8191SEvB Wireless LAN Controller [10ec:8172] (rev 10)
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8191SEvB Wireless LAN Controller [10ec:8172]
Kernel driver in use: rtl8192se

This is the wireless device and the correct kernel driver is being loaded.
if we are looking at the entries under ===== ls /lib/firmware/*.{fw,ucode,bin} in the listing, i suppose that we need to get a separate package that includes the non-free firmware for my device.

There is an old post that may help here: http://codeverge.com/opensuse.org.help.install/need-to-install-support-for-realtek/1908114

the following thread: **Need to install support for Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless NIC without Linux network connectivity
**with the link: http://codeverge.com/opensuse.org.help.install/need-to-install-support-for-realtek/1908114

On the forums I found this post from someone else who also has a
‘Realtek RLT8191SE wireless card’ (http://tinyurl.com/4g9b7ys). I could
not follow the same procedure because wireless is the only connectivity
I have from Linux. I looked into the 11.3 repository specified in the
first “zypper” command he was told to use, then I looked at the
corresponding repository for 11.4. In other words, I looked for the
rpm’s I needed in ‘Index of
/repositories/driver:/wireless/openSUSE_11.4/x86_64’
(http://tinyurl.com/4ys9vjq). I decided that the two rpm’s I needed are
:

  • rtl8192se-0019.1207.2010-1.1.x86_64.rpm
  • rtl8192se-kmp-desktop-0019.1207.2010_k2.6.37.1_1.2-1.1.x86_64.rpm

That seemed to me to be the pattern used for all the different wireless
NICs in these repositories.

So, from Windows, I downloaded both of them and then rebooted into my
new openSuSE 11.4 Desktop. An “rpm -qip” on the first one suggested that
it did somehow include the firmware which was specified as the second
argument in the zypper command. The rpm install for it worked. But the
second one failed with a dependency check looking for
rtl8192se-firmware. So, there is some trick or missing command here
that “zypper” knows about but I don’t. Of course, maybe “zypper” would
of needed connectivity to resolve it too. That is where I need help.

In the following cut&paste, my-docs is a symbolic link to the “My
Documents folder” on Windows.
_/windows/C/Documents_and_Settings/…. Yes, I’m lazy.
