after epson scanner install problem

I’m using KDE and leap 42.2.

This is from memory, sorry if the details are vague.

What do you call the desktop thing in the lower left corner where all the programs are organized? That is now missing, making my computer useless.

I think the machine is stuck in a hardware discovery loop which resulted from a failed install of an Epson scanner, USB connection. While installing the scanner, the machine did a hardware search, identified the scanner, but the scanner SW didn’t work. At the time, the sw organizer in the lower left showed a scanner icon, but when you click on it, nothing happened. I tried the scanner install several times.

In the process, the printer also got messed up. I tried reinstalling it via Yast, but the assembly of drivers was so slow, 1% every 5 minutes, I killed the process. I tried again, same super slow collection of drivers, I did a power button off. I tried again and let the assembly of drivers go over night, the result of which was an error popup that said the assembly of drivers failed.

I use a screen saver screen lock which displays the shut down symbol ( circle with vertical line), which works. This would normally be in the lower left organizer.

Hmm, what else is different? I use an encrypted harddisk. During boot, a small popup usually appears at the bottom center, asking for the harddisk password. Now, sometimes, that popup doesn’t appear, and instead, the query appears in a line of text in a full screen commandline.

What do I do?

Thank you.
