Press ctrl-alt-F1, or F2, and then enter; you might get to the text prompt.

I have this same problem. Using CTRL+ALT+F1 or F@ is only walkaround, no solution. In my case problem is when notebook is plugged into the docking station and I want to use external display to work. When log in using built in display I see GDM or XDM login window correctly. Therefor I guess this is misconfiguration of XDM or GDM. My notebook is ThinkPad W500.
