After 988 updates - system seems damaged

Hy!

Updated a remote TW yesterday evening. Got 988 updates and as the / partition is only 10 GB I had to remove nearly all locales and some old log files to make the updates work.

After reboot VNC server didn’t come back. even starting the VNC server manually doesnt work, the VNC server is not functional any more after doing fine for about 2 years now.

I tried to restart the service, didn’T help, also reboot etc

The log file for the VNCserver looks like

cat firebox10416\:1.log

Trying to contact the vncserver from remote console simply times out, no errors or related.

This has been working fine, update killed the system…

10GB is an awfully small root partition.
When I install a system like this I always make sure that snapshots are turned off.
If you didn’t do this, it’s possible you simply ran out of free disk space and need to free some up, but that might require local machine access.

And,
If this is a difficult to access machine like a remote deployment, I’d strongly consider LEAP instead of TW for better stability and fewer updates.

Unless you are on a “Lights Out” machine or have someone with physical access to the machine your options are limited.

Can your machine boot at all? (You can ping or telnet ports to very any kind of network connectivity if your VNC is not working)
Is SSH open and configured? That might support remote access without an X server.

In any case,
As I’ve described… even if you can get your machine working you might consider re-installing as a LEaP machine.

TSU

Yeah forgot to tell:

TW 64bit KDE, all partitions EXT4 (never use btrfs).

SSH is working, that’s how I extracted the logs, started/stopped the vncserver manually etc. Iwould like to reanimate the install, what has gone wrong with the updates?

On 10 gig root probably just run out of space.

Did you update with “zypper dup” it’s the only proper way.

Yeah, definitely the update ran out of space, as I wrote. Removed some trash and then went smooth. Did again zypper dup today and now everything is back to normal. Strange. TW…

Ordinarily,
temp directory should purge files on reboot…
If you don’t or rarely reboot your machine, you’ll likely want to set up a cron job to clear your temp directory periodically.
Trash ordinarily is something that would fill only if you’re deleting files using a graphical Desktop.
Maybe empty the trash periodically, too.
Or, bypass the Trash altogether by deleting files using the command line.

HTH,
TSU

nope, no trash on /, just 988 updates. And a lot of logs. Machine is rebooted after every kernel update or about once a week…

Then,
Maybe you should prepend a command to clear your temp directory and clear the trash before each upgrade…
ie. write a tiny script and run that instead of simply “zypper dup”
