Advice for new computer with Linux

Hello
I want to buy a new computer.
I had a look at this motherboard. I will play movies HD.

ASUS M3N78-VM

I was wondering if kernel 2.6.30 will supported it fine.

AUDIO: VT1708B 8 Canales High Definition Audio CODEC
VIDEO: Integreted NVIDIA GeForce® 8 Series GPU
Network: NVIDIA nForce integreted Gigabit MAC with RTL8211CL-GR
CHIPSET: GeForce 8200 .

Any idea if all these component of this motherboard is OK for Linux and kernel 2.6.30?

You could look thru this
Hardware - openSUSE

hi miros84; if we tell you that it will most likely work beautifully; (as we got a new system recently that is very similar); will that be good? You could extrapolate the writings of Karl Popper to say that until you try a liveCD you will not know with great certainty

So, you recomment me to try live cd, and if live cd detect it, I can install it. Right?

Yes and No
There are no guarantees but it should give you a good idea

I am worried about the audio
AUDIO: VT1708B
Because i see in internet there are some bugs about this audio.
So, how can I be sure what sounds onboard chips are supported?

If you have physical access to the PC like you do in most big box stores, then do as I do and take a live CD to the store and boot the PC with it. You can check 90% of compatibility that way. Then open a terminal and check the output of

#lspci

#dmesg

at the very least and check for errors or “unknowns”. Between the live CD and these two commands, you should be able to see if it likes Linux. I had a salesman at Best Buy freak out when I asked to do this once with a laptop I was looking at. He was afraid the live CD was going to “do” something to the PC. I told him I wasn’t going to buy it if I couldn’t test it. He was very intrigued once it was booted though. He then wanted to know more about this thing I called Opensuselol!

If you search on the VT1708B you will get this from the alsa web site: Search results - AlsaProject

so clearly it is fairly new (support starting in 1.0.15 of alsa) … I note a likely important update to the driver in alsa-1.0.22. Also note that openSUSE-11.2 comes with only 1.0.20/1.0.21 of alsa. So you may need to update the alsa driver in openSUSE from 1.0.20/21 to 1.0.22, which is easy to do with some rpms of 1.0.22 that have been made for openSUSE … just post and my self or others on our forum can help you update to 1.0.22 using those rpms (they are in a special repository).

If the update to 1.0.22 of alsa does not do the trick, and if you have some patience, and if you are willing to work with the developer of the sound driver, there is a good chance even if the driver does not fully implement everything yet, you could write a bug report on it to get it working properly fairly quickly. For example my Dell Studio 1537 laptop had an unexpected sound quirk, and working with the alsa developer there was a driver fix produced in a week. But I did have to support them, which required average Linux knowledge.

The nice thing about openSUSE is the packager for sound for openSUSE is also a developer for the alsa sound driver. That means any bug report written on openSUSE sound comes to the attention of an alsa sound developer, and any fix that he produces will benefit not only openSUSE, but will benefit the entire Linux community. There is guidance for writting bug reports here: Submitting Bug Reports - openSUSE But as noted, the alsa developer needs help when fixing a bug … ie they will provide updates to alsa to install, and possibly even kernel builds/modules one needs to test.

I have this motherboard, I had no problems w/ suse 11.2.

Hi stooggy
Does your microphone works fine?
