advice about graphic card

I apologize if i am posting this in the wrong category. I would like some advice on what graphic card is better for suse, when having to choose between ati 5550 and nvidia 430 with cuda. Also, what works better on an nvidia 7025, the kde’s own compositing manager or compiz. Thanks in advance

I have had very good luck using nVidia GPU’s and the very latest openSUSE 11.4 seems to do well without loading the nVidia proprietary video driver. If you don’t mind loading this driver, you can get very good 3D performance with nVidia. I have not used a 430, but I have used a 450 and a 460 with very good results in openSUSE. I do use KDE compositing and I have not found it necessary to load anything beyond its default to get good 3D performance. I do not think you can go wrong using nVidia, but this is just my opinion.

Thank You,

Of course not windows. I mean opensuse.

Just saying this without any arguments (see jdmcdaniel3’s post above) but refering to the makers website might be seen here as straight spam.

Please add arguments why you feel that this is a good choice for an openSUSE system.

Because I have this graphics card and it is the best and I have better 3d acceleration than nvidia. That’s why.

Then please tell so. YOUR experience is usefull here, NOT the website of the manufacturer. Tell (in short) what you tested with both brands and what drivers you used for them.
People here want facts, no advertising.

You have 3 question and only 1 topic

From all I can tell the proprietary NVIDIA drivers are currently the best solution, though I have no personal knowledge of them using multiple monitors or a laptop. Even if you go ATI you’re best off with proprietary drivers.

Note: the 260.19 drivers on 32bit openSuse 11.3 are problematic (search the forum)

Compiz has much more options then Kwin but I’ve always had issues with it if I try and run anything except the stable release - try 'em see what you like the cost is $0, just some time.

re: 7025 the blur effect in Kwin might be problematic

I use this graphics card wihtout drivers because I can not find them. I work with xorg.

stamostolias, everyone is welcome to their opinion on the subject and further it is very normal and OK to let someone know that you have a particular type video card working like AMD. As of the first of the year, the ATI name is gone and is all under the AMD name now. You should mention that you use the standard video driver and you are not familiar on how to load the proprietary AMD graphic driver. Since you mention you can’t find them, you need to do a little searching here in the forum. We have MANY users with AMD and indeed all kinds of tricks exist on loading their drivers. I see that please_try_again even has written a script to allow the automatic reinstall of their driver when you update the kernel. Too bad he does not own an nVidia card as we could use his help there for those of use that like to install the nVidia driver the hard way though we do have a repository method we can use.

Thank You,

I have problems with drivers so I have not installed them.

you have used both of those cards in openSUSE and recommend the ATI
one as the best of the two??

Thank you all for your replies. To answer the question, in this case any amd 6000 is out of question because of tight budget. The 430 and 5550 are the best two that i could find, that were of some use when comparing price-performance. That being said then, and considering your feedback, i thing I’ll go for the nvidia with cuda. Oh, but have there been any problems reported with 64-bit drivers?

Cheers

The nVidia 64 bit driver works great for me. Some have reported issues with 32 bit, but if your PC supports 64, then you should be using 64 in my opinion and you should be just fine using nVidia on your PC. Here are some reviews on the GT 430 card:

I did a search on the driver version and the nVidia binary proprietary video driver version 260.19.36 does support the GT 430 in Linux. Anyone contemplating a new video card should always read the following information:

SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE

Here is more info on installing the nVidia driver here:

SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE

If you decide to install the driver the Hard Way, I have a script file that can help you can get here:

LNVHW - Load NVIDIA (driver the) Hard Way from runlevel 3

Message #12 has the most recent version of lnvhw. If you have any other questions, please just ask and read through all of the material provided before you decide to buy a new video card.

Thank You,

I have checked both of two cards and because I use AMD ATI RADEON as my main graphics card, I checked the performance of two these cards and I decided that AMD ATI RADEON is the best.

thanks for the tip and help jdmcdaniel3. I can manage the drivers, i actually prefer installing them using the binary package from the vendor, rather then preconfigured rpm’s. I will go ahead and order the 430. I just hope now, it will handle the gaming i want. Thanks for all the help. Cheers

I was happy to help vaseer and I wish good luck with your new video card. As always, just let us know what we need to do, if you have any issues that need our help in the openSUSE forums.

Thank You,
