Adios Windows... well, not quite

I have a dual boot of Vista and Opensuse 11. I am starting to run out of space on my Opensuse installation and Windows Vista might have to take the hit. I use it so little that everytime I log in it starts updating everything. It’s a veritable patch-a-thon. Unfortunately, I can’t scrap it completely. I use two web sites: Business Banking Online and Revenue Online which only support Windoze boxes. The irony of it is that one of those sites run on a Sun box. The site is excellent though, pity it doesn’t support Linux :frowning:

If you have “enough” hardware resources I suggest the best solution is to run windows as a virtual machine; I am using VirtualBox and it seems to be more “efficient” in allocating disk space to Windows.

If you do try virtualbox, don’t waste your time with the one in the repos, it’s broken.

Download the real (suse 10.3) version from here:

https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_SMI-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=innotek-1.6-G-F@CDS-CDS_SMI

Sun recently bought it apparently.

The suse 10.3 version installs and works perfectly under 11 :).

Is the site running ActiveX?

Instead of asking them to “support Linux” which sounds daunting to them, try asking them to support “Firefox” because they are more likely to get multiple requests for that which they may actually fullfil.

You can make Firefox imitate internet explorer and gain access to many of those IE-only sites.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your replies. The sites use certificates which they expect to find in C:\ROS\RosCerts and C:\mydocument. When you go onto the site and it finds a UNIX file structure, it has a fit. Both of the sites are Java based.

One of the sites support Apple Mac so, should work with Linux? maybe?

You could install wine and wine-doors (I used 1-click), then run wine-doors from the menu and it has a nice menu where you can select MS Internet explorer 6 for install, then simply run it from your menu.

It actually works too :).

Aha! I will give this a try…

I suggest you try using Internet Explorer under Wine or CrossOver Linux and
see if you can get your sites to work. If they do, blow away Windows
altogether. My CrossOver Linux “bottle” takes less than a GB even with a
lot of software installed.

The other thing you might try is using another Browser but telling it to
identify as Internet Explorer. Don’t you just detest the stupid things we
have to do to get around bloody Microsoft domination?
