I attached an external hard drive to an esata port, when i go to my computer to open the drive, i right click and open in a new window i get install additional software, there is no application installed that can open files of this type block device(inode/blockdevice) di you want to install one install or not
do i install the software?
I authenticated in dolphin saw the files and folders then unmounted but should i install the software and is it safe or just unnecessary?
If it’s an NTFS hard drive and if you’re using openSUSE 11.4: there’s a bug in openSUSE 11.4 that stops NTFS partitions from being recognized.
You have to open the text file called “filesystems” located in the folder /etc and edit it so it looks like this:
vfat
hfs
minix
reiserfs
ntfs
*
In KDE use the following menu Run Command:
kdesu kwrite /etc/filesystems
You are adding in a single line that says: ntfs just before the line that has the *, save the file and then reboot after the file was saved.
Thank You,
i did write in ntfs above the * in filesystems rebooted but i still get additional software required when i right click on the disk and choose open in new window
So if you open up a file manager like Dolphin, look for the folder called /media. In that folder will be another, using the disk label of your added disk. When I plug in a USB disk, the first thing that happens it is detected by the Device Notifier in the bottom right of your desktop. It normally pops up for just a second, but you can select it with your mouse at anytime. It uses the USB symbol. Once selected by your mouse, a pop up windows comes up with all installed USB drives, select the drive you just installed. You will see it can be opened with File Manage, using Dolphin by default in KDE. Open that up and the disk will be mounted, again as /media/disk_label. For instance, I just stuck in a USB thumb drive and the disk label is called JDMEXT32GB. So, once selected from the Device Notifier, shown as the disk label JDMEXT32GB and using a File Manager (Dolphin by default in KDE), it gets mounted in the folder called /media/JDMEXT32GB. I really think you are getting this error because you are trying to open it up incorrectly, such as might happen in the “My Computer” icon when not mounted from your fstab file. Try the method I suggest and see if it works.
Thank You,
if i open dolphin i see the drive on the left side. only in root i see a folder named media but when i go in there no folder for my hardrive.
only when i mount it by clicking on the left side in dolphin where i see the sizes of HD i click on the hard drive i want to mount then a pop up opens authentication is required. i type in my password and the hard drive is mounted.
the hard drive doesn’t mount automatically…
my device notifier doesn’t recognize anything when i plug in my hard drive, but when its mounted there is a folder called 5c88ede988edc21e in the media folder but still the device notifier doesn’t recognize any device even when its mounted nothing pops up in the beginning to notify me off a device being attached
