Adding usbserial to the openSUSE

Hi,

I am using openSUSE 11.0 as my primary desktop operating system. HOwever there is one thing that I am not able to do on it in any direct method…and that is web browsing. I currently either browse the net using my Windows OS (which I do not want to do) or else I have to first run a virtual Windows XP system inside VMware Workstation and then make the device visible to the Virtual machinme and then surf net inside the Virtual Machine. But I do not want to do any of them. I want to use my modem directly into Linux, just as I used my mobile GPRS connection to access linux directly in Linux.

I use a wireless broadband modem (a ZTE EV-DO [AC8700 800M] modem). The device is not identifiable by the openSUSE. However there was a way to use the same on Mandriva Linux. The whole procedure had a step where we need to probe for the kernel module ‘usbserial’. The rest of the configuration is not a big problem.

Actually i had successfully done that on Mandriva but I disliked Mandriva when compared to openSUSE. Now, in openSUSE I do not have the ‘usbserial’ module installed. So I am not able to use the modem in openSUSE. Can somebody tell me how to install the ‘usbserial’ module so that I could use my broadband connection on Linux itself?

Please help me.

It has a nice long list of supported hardware…

I’m sure you’ll find out which driver is needed for your modem by just googling for the exact make and model. If Mandriva’s got it, then the driver is surely available for other distros as well; you just have to install it (maybe it’s even in the repositories), modprobe it and off you go.

well thanks for your replies. But the whole this is that I need the ‘usbserial’ driver. I cannot find any website to download it from. Nor do i find this in the repos. My question is: where to find the ‘usbserial’ driver and to install it?

It’s already supplied in OpenSUSE, you just have to modprobe it.
