I downloaded a new application (not from openSUSE) opened it up and installed it from the terminal (following instructions from Ribbonsoft). But I how do I get Gnome to know about so that I can click on an icon to start it. I was trying to read the openSUSE 11.0 book, but I don’t see how to get Gnome can find it so I can click an icon and have it on my list.

If you want a Launcher on the desktop just right-click, click New
Launcher, and then put in the path to your application.
Good luck.
