add country flags to make language forums easier to catch

Moin,
I just have seen we have now links to other language forums - that’s great.

Would it be possible to add country flags at the top of the forums some where to make it easier to see at first glance that there are different language forums simply to reach (eg. like LINUX Club Forum has the UK flag at the top).

The problem is which flag to choose for a language. I grudgingly go with the traditional assignment of the Union Jack to English, but Francophone Canadians might not like the tricolore for French. The Netherlands flag for Nederlands might be an issue for some Belgians. The German flag for German would be less controversial.

But is there a problem at all? I wouldn’t recognise the Hungarian flag at first sight, and presumably Magyar speakers would but they would also recognise their forum. So why not leave things as they are? Nothing’s broken that needs fixing.

I think it needs fixing as language links are pretty buried in the current start page. And yes, some people have an issue that there is eg. a France flag for french and not a Canadian one. But I see the advantage to grasp your language quickly out weight this issue by far.

So from your perspective, is the issue mostly that the language selection
for the interface is not so obvious?

That’s how I understand Michl when we talked about it in person. Have a look at linux-club.de, the prominent position at the top together with the flags highlights the choice far better.

Hi Andreas, welcome to the forums !!! Thought I’d seen the face before…

LINUX • Forum has a flag (USA) which points to http://forums.opensuse.org, that’s all I see. Inhere the language forums are subforums of http://forums.opensuse.org

Normally, flags are used to change the entire language for, for example Joomla, sites, interface and all. Overhere the native language is only used in the subforums AFAIK.

Hi, Andreas - good to see you out here.

Like Knurpht, I only see the link to the openSUSE forums with the US flag

  • is there another option that I’m missing here?

No, the flag is what Michl meant. But he’s on FTO now and can’t speak himself on how to improve this.

OK - I’ll follow up with him when he’s back, then - am interested in what
his idea is so we can see if we can make this clearer.

The German flag for German would be less controversial.

I’m not so sure about this. But they could use the Swiss flag for 4 languages at the same time lol!

Where’s the Fin forum? /whine. >:)

Go ahead and start one, we have a flag ready:

Any news on this issue ?
I think that Michl request was pretty clear : add some countries flags on top with a direct link to the localized sub-forums.

And to be honest, I am sure that the “local” communities will greatly benefit from this small tweak

Hi Jim,

it’s about making visible at first glance. Currently to see that we offer language specific forums you need to scroll down. So at first glance our forums are english only. With flags at the top of the page it would be pretty obvious that we may offer a forum in your native language as well.
