Hallo,
It is the third time that I try to install a new version of openSUSE to a PC (either upgrade an existing installation or do a clean install).
It’s the third time that I found it frustrating to be forced to create a LiveUSB from a 4.7 DVD…
So, what would you think of to create a default option of 2GB USB sticks as next download medium?
The 2GB has a lot of advantages,I believe:
It is large enough to for a complete Desktop Environment stack (either KDE or GNOME) and some “server” applications too.
Is is small enough and users can download it fast
It can be used to “teblets” and newer PCs that DO NOT HAVE a DVD(!)
It can be used as a LiveUSB at anytime or as a Resque System

Another option - build your custom USB stick’s image in SUSE Studio.
IF each option is available, then each user can select what they wish to use.
Problem may be convincing whichever system you intend loading into that it should accept loading method sort.
The downsides of freedom and liberty are all those choices, all those decisions we need make, with all the conflicting advices from others as to which choices are better for us
It was my impression that the OP was more concerned with the download time for the DVD image, than with the cost of the USB drive. For people with a flaky connection, that can be a concern.
For myself, I don’t have a problem with the idea. However, I think it will happen anyway. There has already been some discussion on the factory mailing list, due to the problem that it is getting increasing difficult to build a useful live image that is small enough for a CD.
My guess is that if this change will probably occur before 12.4 (or will that be 13.1) is released, or maybe even for 12.3.
I’m with Jim here: use Studio and create a live ISO with everything on it that you want, f.e. just KDE, no GNOME or the other way around. I created a couple to get Tumbleweed on a machine without having to install first, then switch to Tumbleweed, then having to add Packman and do the same stuff. I included a full KDE install, LAMP server etc. etc.
The point of the proposal is the get rid the LiveCD option. It’s only 650MB and it’s not convenient to download packages that you need.
SUSE Studio is an option, yes, but not a fast one. You need to create a package and then download it.

You’d have to download a 2 GB package as well, and then there’s likely to
be debate over what should be included.
Studio gives you the option to get around that debate by just creating
one. Further, once someone creates it and publishes it into the gallery,
then anyone can download it who wants to.
