Ad-Hoc network with PdaNet and an iPhone

I was using another Linux distro where I would manually set up an Ad-Hoc network by executing this command as root:

iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-Hoc essid xmodem channel 2 key 1234123412

If I do this with openSUSE, I get this error:

Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy.

I see with the NetworkManger app has the option to establish an ad-hoc network. When I set one up the ad-hoc network, it doesn’t actually do anything. No error message, just nothing. To confirm that nothing is happening, PdaNet doesn’t find any ad-hoc network.

I am using openSUSE 11.2, fully updated on a Dell Latitude D630 with a Broadcom BCM4311 b/g card. I am using the ssd driver for it installed via the command “install_bcm43xx_firmware” command.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for your help!

Not all wireless drivers will work in ad-hoc mode, but I believe that b43
does. At least it works in master mode, i.e. as an access point.

Was the network “down” when you got the “busy” response? I’m assuming that
you had transferred from NM control to ifup before you tried the iwconfig
command above.

There is a recent thread in the network-internet Forum asking how to use
NM in 11.0 to setup such a network. I’m not sure if it would work with
that old version, but should be better now.

I tried transferring it from NetworkManager mode to ifup mode but that hadn’t changed anything except that the wlan0 becomes unavailable and the status light on the computer turns off. I had previously used ndiswrapper on the other distro for this wireless card and the status light would blink with network activity.

After establishing the network in ifup mode, I would not be able to actually connect to it and utilize the ad-hoc connection.

Ultimately, I would rather use the NetworkManager to establish and connect to an ad-hoc network rather than monkey around with the CLI.

I’m going to wait until 11.3 comes out to work on this situation. Just a couple days!

Hi,

Did you find any solution to this problem? I have the same issue with my machine, when creating an ad hoc network in network manager. Nothing, as to the issue of whether or not my chip has the ability to create ad hoc network I was successful using the latest Ubuntu LTS. Any solutions for KDE lovers?

Regards

I’ve got the same problem running OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit on a Lenovo G560. When I select “New Ad-hoc Network” in Network Manager the window closes and nothing happens. Anybody have a solution? I’d really love to be able to make an ad-hoc network, it would keep my wife from complaining about the snaking cables all over the place
