ACX111-based wireless advice: 'tiacx111c16'

Hello everyone! After some time away I’m back with a question on my wireless setup.

Firstly, I’d like to say thanks to deltaflyer44 for sending me a copy of suse 11. on DVD. I really appreciated it and will endeavor with suse!

Ok, once again I want to say I am very new to this so please be slow and gentle. I want to know if I need to use ndiswrapper software to activate my wireless card etc. I ran dmesg in the console and I got:

acx: found ACX111-based wireless network card at 0000:02:02.0, irq:18, phymem1:0xDFEFC000, phymem2:0xDFEC0000, mem1:0xf91ec000, mem1_size:8192, mem2:0xf92c0000, mem2_size:131072
initial debug setting is 0x000A
using IRQ 18
acx: need to load firmware for acx111 chipset with radio ID 16, please provide via firmware hotplug:
acx: either one file only (<c>ombined firmware image file, radio-specific) or two files (radio-less base image file plus separate <r>adio-specific extension file)
requesting firmware image ‘tiacx111c16’
acx: firmware image ‘tiacx111c16’ was not provided. Check your hotplug scripts
requesting firmware image ‘tiacx111’
acx: firmware image ‘tiacx111’ was not provided. Check your hotplug scripts
acx: reset_dev() FAILED

Do I need the ndiswrapper or just some for of firmware update? I also found this wiki on ‘tiacx111’
Distribution list/Slackware - ACX100/ACX111 wireless network driver project

Sorry of this has all been heard before. I appreciate all comments and help.

Rich

You do not need ndiswrapper. Go to
http://acx100.erley.org/fw/acx111_1.2.1.34/, download tiacx111c16 and
copy it to /lib/firmware. You will need to be root for the last part.

Larry

So all I do is copy that to the directory and reboot? That is quite simple!!! I’ll give that a go and post back later. Thanks larry!

Ok, I did all that and I ran the same stuff again. Can someone check to see what I have is correct?

Is it just a case of setting up the precise settings now in the Network manager? I did try to set up a connection based on the SSID and WEP key but I didn’t get much luck. I also tried to find the router by typing its IP address but again, no luck. What should I do now?

I also get this message when trying to update my network settings:

Download (curl) error for ‘http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/repodata/repomd.xml’:
Error code:
Error message: Couldn’t resolve host ‘download.opensuse.org

Ok, now I think I’m getting VERY close to connecting. I can see other networks as well as the one I want to join! I’m now just having trouble with connecting (which is what was happening before in XP). I think it may be a router problem / setting now!

What kind of network setting does linux prefer? What kind of WEP setting works best? E.g. 64 / 128 Hex? I have a rubbish BTHomeHub (yes I know I need a better router)

Any suggestions will be tried continuously!

should work no problem with a BTHomeHub. i have one & can connect with wep/wpa/wpa-psk/wpa-tkip. try using exactly what the router uses, ascii to ascii, hex to hex, passphrase to passphrase. make sure you have set it up in YaST as well.make sure you select 40/128 when using hex in YaST & it will be 128 on the hub,IIRC

Andy

Thanks deltaflyer. I’m still having a few teething problems with the connection but I think it’s all down to hub / pc settings. I decided to move the pc next to the hub and connect via cable. This has allowed me to get all the auto updates (which I think will help a lot with everything). Once that is finished, I’ll keep trying again.

One thing I’ve noticed is that my system is now playing up quite a bit. The HDD light is almost constantly on and the mouse stops working sometimes and the keyboard starts flashing and is not responsive? Any ideas on that weird one? It doesn’t always happen, just occasionally.

Thanks for the help guys. I’m very much enjoying using openSUSE!

check if beagle is running, it’s a system hog. if it is, disable & uninstall it. to find out, type “top” in a console & press enter

Andy

I’m giving that a go. What ever it is, it’s really slowing down my system! If not, I’ll try re-installing again.

Naa, it didn’t seem to change anything. Im going to do another install and see how that goes. I’m connected via the ethernet, so I can update again. I’m wondering if it had anything to do with my windows partition and when I setup a link for my media in Banshee? Oh well, live and learn.

Ahh, much better. I’m also installing plenty of extras (like codecs, VLC and updates). Thank god for Foxmarks is all I can say!

So, i take it wireless is working ? if so, Congratulations, now enjoy

Andy

No, wireless not working yet (using my ibook) and the weird flashing of my keyboard / system freezing is back. I think it’s connected to the settings in Network config. When I selected ‘Network Managed’ or something like that from ifup, it started. I think thats what is draining the system and causing problems.

I can tell I’m really close to getting it to work. I also want to connect to my router through Firefox but that doesn’t seem to work. Hmmm, I’ll keep at it. Here is a list of info on my present setup:

Options are:
[on]boot : we are currently booting (or shutting down)
auto : alias for boot
hotplug : we are handling a hotplug event
manual : we do it manually (default, just needed with ‘rc’
rc : we are called by a rc script (implies auto)
dhcp : we are called from dhcp client
prov=<n> : use provider <n> (for dial up interface)
nodeps : don’t shut down interfaces depending on this
debug : be verbose
syslog : write to syslog if USE_SYSLOG=yes
check : return R_BUSY (=10) if there are
active connections on this interface
If options are contradictionary, last option wins. Unknown options
are simply ignored, so be careful.

Oh Jesus! I turned on desktop effects and now the screen is white!!! Now I can’t get it back! Give me a break!!!

/me chuckles Sorry, desktop effects can be a pain.best thing to do, temporarily log in as root & reset user. as for wireless, looks like it is associating as i see the AP.things to check:

1 ) ipv6 is off in system & firefox
2 ) firewall is set correctly

Andy

Log in as root? Reset user? *Simple OSX/XP chap here! Do I need to change my session and use a terminal there?

right, at the log-in screen, type root in the username box,in the password box, type root’s password. You will see alsorts of dire warnings & pictures. you can ignore them for now,as you won’t be there long enough to do any damage. Now follow this step-by-step:-

1 ) click on root’s home
2 ) click the up arrow unti you see the home folder
3 ) click on home folder
4 ) click on your username
5 ) click on view - show hidden files
6 ) look for the .kde or .gnome folder
7 ) right click it & select rename
8 ) rename it to .kde.old/.gnome.old
9 ) close all windows & log out.
10 ) log in as your user,eh voila! kde/gnome should be back to normal.
11 ) if you have anything important in the old folder, copy it to the new folder

Andy

I owe you a drink. Oh wait, no, it hasn’t worked!?
