Acrobat reader wont start

Hi openSuse users,
since my last update yesterday acrobat wont start any more.
The error message is

/usr/share/themes/Sonar/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:88: error: unexpected identifier `progressbarstyle', expected character

I already removed the gtk2-metatheme-sonar pkg and installed the opensuse branding theme, then install gtk2-metatheme-sonar agin. Noting helpt. The only thing that has changed is, that the error message is gone. Now acrobat just does not start.

Hope somebody can help. I need to do an urgent print job until Friday (other pdf viewer produce a different print result)

Hi
Is there a hidden file in your home directory called .gtkrc is so there
may be where the error is.

Can you create a test user and login, then see if acoread works for the
test user.

Hi malcolmlewis,
I deleted all hidden files containing gtk or gnome in the filename. Deleted also .acrobat

Nothing helps.

I’ll try logging in with another user this afternoon.

Thx for your reply.

are you asking about the firefox plug-in, or the stand alone
application “Adobe Reader”?

goldie

@malcolmlewis: tried with another account. same problem.

@goldie:
The standalone and the plug version do not work.

Hi
Have you tried uninstalling acroread and then logout, then log back in
and re-install acroread.

Hi malcolmlewis,
yes I tried your solution but it did not work aswell.
Today I made some updated and now I’m getting the previous error message when I’m launching acroread from console.

/usr/share/themes/Sonar/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:88: error: unexpected identifier `progress barstyle', expected character `}'

By the way: I printed my work on my brothers pc. So the problem is not urgent anymore. But would be nice if my acrobat reader would work again. :slight_smile:

Try using Clearlooks GTK theme and start Acrobat again, to see if that
helps.

May I suggest that you shred the Acrobat Reader and switch to something less consuming and stubborn? There’s a lot of alternatives, that make Adobe’s reader obsolete: kpdf, xpdf, okular

I always thought that was the standard advice for a Windows application. Never thought I’d see it in a Linux forum;)

Sadly, Acrobat Reader is the only way to go for some PDFs (encrypted and
form-to-fill ones). Also, has some pretty functions for automatic printing
of brochures (booklets, flyers, etc…).

BTW, I agree is a bloated application. I don’t even have it installed on my
systems :slight_smile:

Hi
LOL, no the windows one would be fdisk/re-install besides, I didn’t say
your had to reboot, just logout :slight_smile:

this bug also hits me!
exactly same behaviour!
even the older acroread 8.x won’t start.
and there is no real error message, even if called with “strace”.

and it freezes the whole X session until killed from text-console.

very strange!

it must have to do something with latest updates.
maybe gnome-updates?

@Camaleón Guest
thx for your suggestion to use another theme. I tried but had no luck.

@all
Acrobat is still the only reader which handles every valid pdf (encrypted, protected, …) and the only one I know with booklet functionality.
So it is not possible for me to use other PDF viewer.

As far as nobody has another solution the only option I see now is to reinstall opensuse (windows like)

@all Thx for your help!

STOP! STOP! STOP!

i have the solution!!!

it is the package gtk2 (or gtk2-32bit on x86_64 systems)!!

with version 2.14 it works!

i had upgraded gnome to version 2.27.91 this updated gtk2 from version 2.14.4-8.7.1 to version 2.17.9-52.1.

after this acroread didn’t work any more.
but, of course, i didn’t know that this was the source of the problem.

but after having made a “strace acroread” i saw, that acroread stopped after searching for libpixbufloader-xpm.so which is part of the package gtk2/gtk2-32bit.

so i downgraded this package to version 2.14.4-8.7.1 and now acroread works again!

so just downgrade gtk2 or downgrade the whole gnome!

adobe has to do something here, because next versions of most distributions will all come with gtk2 in version 2.17.x!

rainerklier you saved me a lot of time!!!

After downgrading to gtk 2.14 everything works as expected

Fortunately I had no tome yet to reinstall opensuse :smile:

i am glad i could help you!
i also was very happy that i found a solution.
this was annoying.

lucky you. lol!

i have to tell this to the opensuse/novell-people and/or to the adobe-people.
