[Acer TravelMate 2300] OpenSUSE 11.2 - Shutdown problem.

Hello,

I am using SUSE since version 9.x and I don’t have other operating system. But now I’ve a big problem with OpenSUSE 11.2 and my laptop (on 11.1 everything was great) - I cannot shutdown/suspend my SUSE - it’s halting on different parts on system (for example: kdb) and I’ve to hold power button for 3 seconds to turn off laptop. Sometimes system is switching down (off) correctly - but this is rare situation. I tried to find something using Google, but without result.

This is result of: grep -i acpi /var/log/boot.msg

My brother and sister are using openSUSE 11.2 too, and they don’t have such problems (but they got x86_64 compilation nad other models of PC).

Depending which kernel you have installed (Probably kernel-desktop
You could try using kernel-default

Or try adding acpi=off to the boot argument

Hello,

Thanks for help, but i tried before tips given by you - without result. I’ve installed Desktop kernel but I boot default “vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-0.1-default” - I also tried to add “acpi=off” to boot argument in grub, but after that system doesn’t even boot. First it hold for about one minute on setting hardware clock (something like that), later after typing login and password to GDM is white screen and that’s all) - So i cannot check if I can shutdown it…

Uh, i forgot to add that I am using on ‘/’ partition Ext4 and on /home/ Raiserfs (because I format only ‘/’ partition after changing from 11.1-> 11.2). I heard that Ext4 have some bugs bot it doesn’t seems that file system can be a reason.

Any ideas ?

Matthew

Hello,

I tried to use utility from OpenSUSE 11 (DVD) to detect problems with hardware/firmware and that’s result:

http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/2557/20100106229.th.jpg](http://img709.imageshack.us/i/20100106229.jpg/)http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/4484/20100106230.th.jpg](http://img709.imageshack.us/i/20100106230.jpg/)

i also read whole logs during boot and shutdown system and i found something like this:

I think that the most important line is:

I also tried to boot and then shutdown/suspend LiveCD with OpenSUSE 11.2 x86 with GNOME and there is no problem with LiveCD - this version shutdown and suspend my Acer fine with no problems (but i tried to test it about 4-5 times).
I want to remind that before OpenSUSE 11.2 i had a 11.1 version and there was no problem with shutdown/suspend - it worked perfect.

Maybe BIOS upgrade could help me?

Please help me, anybody :slight_smile:

regards
Matthew

I guess going back to 11.1 is a possibility? Then look to 11.3 in the Summer.

Or look for your BIOS update.

Do you suggest that problem can be with version of OpenSUSE? Or more propability is problem with BIOS? What you suggest to do at first? Downgrade to 11.1 or upgrade my BIOS? (this laptop is almost 5 years old… ) Maybe I should report this problem on bugzilla to help repair this problem in 11.3?

Greetings
Matthew

I suggest it is more likely down to the openSUSE kernel.

You can get a working kernel which with an update can break things like suspend. Then the next update can can be OK again.

If 11.1 worked so well, I would go back to it in Gnome. It’s a different kernel altogether.

Remember the files system is ext3
If you still have ReiserFS I would consider changing that some time in the future.

11.3 is not a long way off and may be different again.

Here though are some kernel boot arguments to consider/try on 11.2 if you like

acpi=off
edd=off
apm=off
pci=noacpi
acpi=noirq
acpi_irq_balance
acpi_irq_nobalance
pci=nomsi
acpi=ht

Hi !! :slight_smile:

I have the same problem my friends :frowning: !
(laptop: sony vaio VGN-NW21SF/T with open SuSe 11.2)

I found a temporary way to power off my laptop but I still
want to solve it with another right way.

what I have done:

System–> System–> power Management preferences–>
==>General(tab)–>When the power button is pressed -->shutdown

Hi,

Could you post listening given by command

cat /var/log/boot.msg |grep -i bios

I’m just curious. I’m living with hope to solve this problem, but there is big posibility that we’ll have to downgrade to 11.1 … how old is your laptop/BIOS?

greetings
Matthew

Hi again!

I am not writting from the laptop now ,so I will post you the results later .( sorry :|)

But I have some news about the problem!

I installed the new kernel from the open suse repository and now
it seems that all are ok now.

Try to update open suse 11.2 with the new kernel 2.6.31.8

My bios is not too old.

good luck !:wink:

So our problems aren’t the same problem - i have new kernel for about few days and nothing happened - the same problem:

vmlinuz-2.6.31.8-0.1-default

poor me - I’ll try do to something in weekend, first BIOS update (maybe in new BIOS my laptop will be able to boot from pendrive?:slight_smile: ), later downgrade to OpenSUSE 11.1…

greetings :wink:

Finally ,the problem is not fixed with the update.

After the update I turned off by the menu 3 times and the laptop switched off. But, I tried again hours later and it didn’t power off. (black screen)

Hi,

So you’ve different problem but probably coused by BIOS/ACPI rules in OpenSUSE 11.2 - did you’ve installed 11.1 before (how it worked?) ?. Your temporary solution to set ACPI rule on power button to shutdown didn’t helped me :frowning:

I’ll try today to turn of ACPI(as a service) and run with ‘–noacpi’ and others parameters to boot system.

Later (maybe tomorrow) I’ll update BIOS and after that (if won’t help) downgrade OpenSUSE.

Greetings

:frowning:

I did not install open SuSe 11.1 on my laptop.

What you would advise me to do to fix the problem?

greetings :wink:

Hi,

I’m here just to tell you that upgrade of BIOS do nothing 4 me and my OpenSUSE… :frowning:

greetings

Hi, I know this is a bit late for this thread…
But I’m having the same issue on SuSe 12.1
A fresh install on a DELL Vostro 1700 and all was right (except for wifi and vga drivers, but that was fixed)…
There was a kernell update, and then this issue appeared…
Any help? I’m kinda new on this, but I’m not affraid of some hard work on this, thanks to all!

Hello apmauj,

I don’t have any good news for you. I’ve a new notebook for about 2 years and I don’t have this problem any more.
I’m just curious if it’s not problem with upgrade/update part of OpenSUSE. I had this issue after update of kernel the same as you.
For me it was OpenSUSE 11.2, and for you it’s version 12.1.

Greetings;)
