anyone knows how to use the power management program of acer so as to get the advantage of 8-9 hours battery life in opensuse?
should i make any configurations so as my ethernet to work?
i got automatically connected by a router this morning but in another one that i’m trying now, nothing happens…
sound is weird…
some times it loads with muted sound so i have to correct every time.
i still couldn’t get an mp3 to play… didn’t have the time to search for any solution of it yet.
im trying to download th file libdvdcss and all the dependencies of it(i have it in ayto)of almost 60 mbs but in the end seems that is not installed because i see no tick beside it but also because if i try to install it again, it gets installed again with all the 60 mbs without any prompt that i have it already…
maybe because i don’t know yet how this works…
how can i see which are already installed?
as far as i searched, i found nowhere any file that is already installed(ticked).
in case i’ve got something already and try to install it again doesn’t prompt me about it?
i could probably have the same libdvdcss and everything that came with it 2 or 3 times???
is there something like windows update to aytomatically download stuff for my system?
If one has OSS, Non-OSS, and Update setup, then one can setup zypper to automatically do updates. BUT having typed that, my recommendation is one NEVER do this. NEVER.
The reason being Linux has an unfortunate characteristic integral to the design, where kernel updates can break one’s graphics, wireless, webcam, sound, and other drivers custom built for a specific kernel version. Kernel updates can also break one’s boot files, and it is useful to check those files after a kernel update before rebooting. Hence BEFORE every kernel update, one should first check to see if one has drivers associated with a new kernel, and confirm one’s boot files are good.
Blindly accepting updates in Linux is IMHO a bad idea. Linux is not like Mac/Windows where less user attention is needed.
Are you certain your ethernet hardware device is good? Your cable is good? Wired ethernet is typically a strong point of Linux over other OS.
Did you go to YaST > Network Devices (i’m not at a Linux PC right now so I don’t know exact menu entry) and try to configure your wired device under YaST ?

i have it on dual boot and when i’m in vista it connects normally!
(((Did you go to YaST > Network Devices (i’m not at a Linux PC right now so I don’t know exact menu entry) and try to configure your wired device under YaST ?)))
i’m not even sure if my card is detected…
i have atheros but there is no atheros there, just attansic controller and ethernet network card.
which one should i try to configure?
It is usually very easy to determine if your “card” is detected. Simply type in a konsole or terminal:su -c lspci and enter root password when prompted. That will “list” your PC’s “pci” devices.
If you type lsusb that will list your PC’s currently plugged in USB devices.
this is what i got but this is not atheros!?!
do i have to configure it anyway?
i got this!
Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details.
What makes you believe it is atheros? My brief surfing on this suggests it uses Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 5100 or Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 5150. Your documentation should tell you.
My guess is that this is your PC’s wired connection (and not the wireless).
If you type:
su -c ‘lspci -v’
and enter root password.
Then scroll up and look for the details of the “01:00.0” and it should give you more information on your Attansic …
Anyway, IMHO that is the device you should be configuring in YaST to get your wired connection working. I say IMHO as I do not know this for certain, but that would be my best guess.
yes! it refers to attansic…
i thought about atheros because i saw it in networks of vista.
anyway how can i configure it if the “add” button is off?
as i wrote earlier it says:
“Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details.”
