Acer 5738, Vista, Suse 11.1 + Blank Screen

HELP PLEASE

I BOUGHT A NEW LAPTOP WITH VISTA ON IT. IT WAS WORKING FINE. AFTER SOME DAYS I GOT A SUSE INTALLATION DISC DVD.

I INSTALLED IT. IT WENT THROUGH VERY WELL. I RESTARTED THE COMPUTER. IT SHOWED ME A BLACK SCREEN. I READ SOME ARTICLEES, FORUMS BUT COULDNT GET THROUGH THIS.

I REINSTALLED SUSE. BUT STILL THE SAME BLACK SCREEN ERROR.

I AM ABLE TO GO TO DESKTOP VIA FAILSAFE OPETION IN GRUB.

I TRIED TO CHANGE THE GRAPHICS SETTINGS(YAST) BUT NO GO.

ITS KINDA FRUSTRATING GOING IN CIRCLES NO SILOTION, LET ME KNOW IF ANY ONE FIND THE SOLUTION.

MOSLTY ITS GRAPHICS DRIVERS ISSUE, BUT HOW TO GO ABOUT IT?

WAITING FOR A RESPONSE!!! THANKS IN ADVANCE

Hi, varunmaggo

Please give more info on your graphics card/chipset. Is it NVidia? ATI? Intel? What model?

What’s your display resolution? Is this the laptop LCD or an external monitor?

Usually you can go back to a workable condition if you:

  1. start on level 3 (type “init 3” at the boot screen options line)

  2. login as root (login=“root”, give root password when asked)

  3. type the following command: “sax2 -r -m 0=<driver>”, where <driver> can be “nv” (for nvidia graphics), “radenhd” (for newer ATI cards), “vesa”, among others.

Note that the double quotes are just for better understanding, not to be typed.

There are many tutorials and howto’s to troubleshoot this, see the opensuse site howto’s for your graphics card.

Oh, and please save the CAPS for really important stuff only. It’s akin to SHOUTING and is usually taken as impolite or peremptory, which may reduce the number of people wiling to help.

Hi buddy!

This issue is fixed. i logged into Failsafe and update the openSuse 11.1 to the latest release and restarted my computer.

To my surprise it fixed this issue.

I’m able to login to openSuse 11.1, check my mails, listen to musix, watch videos. no More blank black scren anymore.

Now i will head for Mono Project - .net development.

PS: i didn’t realized my CAPS lock was on last time.
