AccuWeather

Is any one having trouble viewing videos here?

AccuWeather.com

I filed a complaint with them and actually got a response. Of course they were asking me to try in IE. Ain’t gonna happen. Perhaps the service tech didn’t see that I was using operating system ‘other’. And I mentioned in comments that OS is openSUSE. I’m in 11.1 and 11.2 RC2 x86_64 KDE 4.3.2 [problem is in both]. I’ve tried in Firefox, Konqueror, and Opera.

Would like to know if others are encountering this so I can add to my report with them. >:)

Doesn’t play for me in 11.2
However my F10 box works fine. All browsers.

> However my F10 box works fine. All browsers.

which tends to mean it is not a Linux problem nor a AccuWeather site
problem, but rather an openSUSE problem…

which does not make me happy, since their video won’t play here on
10.3, in any browser

i note that AccuWeather is using Microsoft-IIS/6.0 to serve, and
wonder since Novell and Mr. Steve are now buddies if we couldn’t get
MS to tutor our developers on how to setup openSUSE to play friendly
with their stuff…

For 11.2 KDE 4.3.2:

Does not work in Konqueror
Works in Firefox (3.5.3 from the opensuse mozilla repo)

Cheers
Steve

I just tried in a 64-bit openSUSE-11.1 with MozillaFirefox-3.5.3. I also have flash-player-10.0.32.18-0.1.1 and nspluginwrapper-1.2.2-7.1 and the depreciated mplayerplug-in-3.55+cvs20090923-0.pm.2.2 . It works fine.

Tried 11.1 and 11.2 RC1 with FF3.5.3 and got the same result - a black
screen and greyed-out controls. I’ve Adobe Flash 10.0.32.18 on both systems.

How long did you wait? I had to wait 30 seconds on a very high speed connection for the video to stream.

Starts up in a few secs on my F10 Box and my adsl is slower than your line Lee.
But openSUSE is no go. I just don’t have the time or inclination to look into it ATM.

Update:
It’s ok for me with Opera 10 in openSUSE, not with Konqueror.

wow…me too (works in Opera [but not in konqueror or firefox]…

and that, Maria Molina sure has big . . . eyes!!

I’m just watching Housewives and it touches on a similar subject.

Thanks everyone for replies. I’ll have to dink around a little more and then see what to do… Had a few thoughts at work today, will try some things and post back later this week.

Well yes I mean the quality of weather forecasting is just, well, better. I gotta get this to work.

How about 22 hours on a 20Mb link - and still waiting?

Yes, just tried Opera (on 11.1) and it’s fine. Also, in 11.1, Opera works
with a Java loop that Firefox often freezes on, though Firefox is OK with
that in 11.2.

You are kidding? You waited 22 hours? In my rather humble view, after waiting for a couple of minutes, maximum, there is no point in continuing. … My view is it is counter productive to wait 22 hours, and in such a case the investigation time is far better spent elsewhere.

I noted in my earlier post, that I succeeded in a 64-bit openSUSE-11.1 with MozillaFirefox-3.5.3. I also have flash-player-10.0.32.18-0.1.1 and nspluginwrapper-1.2.2-7.1 and the depreciated mplayerplug-in-3.55+cvs20090923-0.pm.2.2 . It works fine.

I think rather than wait 22 hours it would be far more useful to check one’s version numbers and applications against what I have installed, where what I have installed “just works” … to see if there are any differences. If no differences from what I have in place on my PC, then state so. If there are differences, then possibly try what I have in place to see if it works?

I definitely do not have 22 hours to waste on this particular weather web site. There are other weather sites that I believe to be superior.

Same for me. Not working with 11.1, FF3.5.3.

I have the same problem with videos on the BBC news site. Never could get those to play either.

Last I checked, the BBC news site works for me.

Do you have 32-bit or 64-bit 11.1 ? In your FF.3.5.3 what flash player version are you using? Are you using the gecko-mediaplayer or the mplayerplug-in with your FF3.5.3 ? And what version of either of those two applications.

If we wish this thread to remain a “poll” (which is sort of what the original poster appeared to be asking for) then minimal information is all one needs to reply. And thats fine. I participated in the “poll” and I will leave the thread.

But if we wish to figure out why this works for some of us in Firefox, and not for others, then I believe those who have it working, and those who do not have it working, need to be more precise in the technical details that they provide. Frankly, other than the post by me, I do not see anyone else who has provided the details. All just IMHO. Hopefully that observation offends no one, … and it is probably best I depart this poll.

I was basically just replying to the OP’s question. Wasn’t particularly looking for a way to resolve the problem but I may as well provide my details if that helps anyone.
I have 32bit 11.1, flash player 10.0.32.18-0.1.1, mplayerplugin 3.55+cvs20090923-0.pm.2.2.

As for the BBC news site I thought the videos may only be for UK viewers so never really bothered about checking why they don’t work.

Which is what I did. The 22 hours - more than that now - is on a machine
that I only use for testing, so no time wasted.

I have same Firefox, flash is 10.0.32.18-3.1. Nspluginwrapper and mplayer
are not installed. That’s 11.2,

I’ll try that - Blimey! That was weird. Just got switched to the login
screen. Session hadn’t crashed but the system just decided I’d be better off
elsewhere. Switched back OK so no harm done.

As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, I’ll try that. Firefox
has always been a bit flaky with its plugins - at least it has for me.

As a retired meteorologist, I’d agree with you but then I’m biased.
