Access windows from Opensuse

Hi experts,
This is the first time I am using Opensuse. I have used Ubutnu 9.04 for a month. At present I have dual boot with Vista and Opensuse
I use Windows Vista Home Premium
Opensuse 11.0(i586) kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1 , Kde 3 desktop
The problem is that I cannot connect to the internet. (The PCI wireless driver is Atheros 242x.I use ASus F5RL laptop). Because of that, I have to logout and login to Windows to type any output of the terminal commands.
I want to access Windows from Opensuse. It says ‘You dont have permission’, so cannot copy the output in Windows.
To download any apt package I need to be connected to the internet.

What do I do?

staretnovell.

Index of /repositories/driver:/wireless/openSUSE_11.0

(download, transfer to openSUSE box, right-click => install)

 • Unload and blacklist ath5k driver
su

password

modprobe -rv ath5k

echo "blacklist ath5k" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local
 • Remove old udev-rule and let udev write a new one:
su

password

rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

udevadm trigger

I read ‘Choosing the right package’. I will check that out in suse box.
I dont know how to transfer the downloaded package to the Opensuse box. I cant access suse from vista . I have tried software from ext2fs, diskinternals. From suse it says I dont have permission to write to any document in windows. So have to use them as ‘mutually exclusive’ OSes.

staretnovell

I bet you will at least have reading accesss to your Vista partition (and that will be enough).

Uname -r
Output: 2.6.25.5_1.1-pae
Cat /etc/Suse-release
No such folder exists

I have read access from suse and will try out the madwifi though I have these which are a close fit.

arusb_lnx-kmp-pae-git20090326_2.6.25.5_1.1-2.1.i586.rpm
ipwraw-ng-kmp-pae-2.3.4_2.6.25.5_1.1-1.1.i586.rpm
madwifi-kmp-pae-r4096_2.6.25.5_1.1-1.1.i586.rpm
rt61-cvs-kmp-pae-2009030304_2.6.25.5_1.1-3.1.i586.rpm
rt73-cvs-kmp-pae-2009030304_2.6.25.5_1.1-5.1.i586.rpm
rt3070sta-kmp-pae-2.1.1.0_2.6.25.5_1.1-4.1.i586.rpm
rtl8187se-kmp-pae-git20090513_2.6.25.5_1.1-1.1.i586.rpm

I have only chosen madwifi from the list. Let me check access from suse partition

staretnovell

Might as well be a NetworkManager problem. Install WICD from Software.openSUSE.org, read some earlier posts on how to enable that, and see what happens.

Akoellh,
I have done what you said. As I had written earlier, only installed madwifi package and it seems to be there. I have written those commands
modprobe -rv ath5k
echo “blacklist ath5k” >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local
rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
udevadm trigger
I dont see any connections.

By the way, I have checked the Network Settings on Yast and on the Overview tab, it says
L2 100Mbit Ethernet Adapter – Not configured
AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter – Not configured.
The notes for Wireless says’ Unable to configure the network card because of kernel device(eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware(for wlan0 devices). Check dmesg
I have checked and found that
linux-c9xx firmware.sh[0980]. cannot find firmware file ‘intel-ucode /06-0f-od’.
I searched for ‘intel-ucode /06-0f-od’ on google and yahoo . did not find anything concrete

Knurpht,
I will get to Wicd after this. I have used this when using Ubuntu earlier.

staretnovell

Knurpht,
How do I install wicd? Is it in the software menu? I cant access internet wired or wirelessly in opensuse.

Staretnovell

Hi,
I have configured wireless on network settings to DHCP.
I can see wireless now (ath0) and also below I can see my network which shows almost full strength. I have clicked on that. Firefox and Konqueror still do not open any website.
What is the next step?

Staretnovell

Hello Anybody,
Who knows what is to be done next?
I can see ‘ath0’ on wireless and can see my network.
I cant connect using firefox, opera.
Do I have to configure something? I have unchecked IPV6.

Nobody has any answers?
Anyone?

sorry i can’t give you a step by step to get yours working, but hope
this helps and gets you going:

most of the real networking gurus hang out in the forum that
mentions their specialty, give it a try:

http://forums.opensuse.org/network-internet/

hint: there will be folks there who have NO idea about YOUR hardware,
software, the type of network you are hooking to and through what
(*dls modem, cable box, ethernet to router, university LAN, dialup
28.8, what what what?)

are you behind a proxie?

on a campus/in a country with a controlled masking/firewall out/in?

did networking work DURING install?
http://en.opensuse.org/INSTALL_Local#Automatic_Configuration)

when you read through the newbie (to openSUSE) guide at
http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9 prior to beginning your install, did you
check your downloaded iso (and the burned disk afterwards) to make
sure you were not installing incomplete, jumbled or corrupted software?

after installing (continuing on in the n00b guide) did you set up your
repos correctly? did you follow the referenced guide on wireless?

at the bottom of the page where you download
<http://software.opensuse.org/> is a link to the “Official openSUSE
11.1 Start-Up guide” which includes “Learn how to set up or modify key
components of your system: hardware components such as monitors or
printers and network connections such as Internet access.” did you
have any trouble following the instructions there?

talk man…we can’t guess what the problem might be…well, let me say
it this way: i have almost NO idea about networking…i do know that
on my machine, with an ethernet wire between it and a router which was
plugged into a *dls, it just worked and all i had to do was set the
router and openSUSE to use DCHP (which i learned by reading)…

did you have connectivity in Ubuntu? how did you set up the networking
there? did you set up openSUSE the same way?

I HAVE done a fresh re-install

most of the real networking gurus hang out in the forum that mentions their specialty, give it a try:

I will give it a try.

are you behind a proxie?

I connected to the internet via Netgear router , that will make it a network, wont it?

on a campus/in a country with a controlled masking/firewall out/in?

It is the usual. not being firewalled.

did networking work DURING install?

Never worked,even during this install.

check your downloaded iso (and the burned disk afterwards) to make sure you were not installing incomplete, jumbled or corrupted software?

The iso is fine. The md5sum is correct.

after installing (continuing on in the n00b guide) did you set up your repos correctly? did you follow the referenced guide on wireless?

I will check the rest of the instructions again.

did you have connectivity in Ubuntu? how did you set up the networking there? did you set up openSUSE the same way?

In Ubuntu I used ndiswrapper for windows. I used madwifi and also wicd. I was suggested all these but wireless did not work at all. However,Ubuntu always connected with wires.
The last thing I saw was wireless networks on wicd. however it could not connect wirelessly
In suse I used the knetwork manager and I cant connect with wires or without wires. I cant see it in the install cd either.

Thank you for your help.
I will try configuring network manager.
I cant do the ‘edit’ on the L2 ethernet adapter and on the Ar242x wireless adapter

staretnovell

Go here:
Software.openSUSE.org

Select your openSUSE version from the dropdownmenu, enter ‘wicd’ in searchbox, hit Enter. Perform a one-click install.

The link is available only after Monday but will find wicd on the suse DVD or try to get it from Windows and open it from suse.

I downloaded it in Windows . Cant do a click install because I get this error.
Subprocess failed
What do I do now?

wait!

have you installed openSUSE?
have you booted up into openSUSE?

let me start over: openSUSE is NOT a program which runs in Windows
like MS-Word or WoW runs in Windows…

openSUSE is LIKE Windows (but much better and more advanced…it is
NOT for everyone…may be too advanced for you, sorry)

read here: http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9

you download an openSUSE image (iso file) and BURN it to a CD or DVD
(depending on which you downloaded…then put the CD/DVD into your
caddy, and quickly EXIT windows, shut down/turn off the computer,
turn it on again and it will boot will boot openSUSE from the CD/DVD
(if your BIOS is set to allow CD/DVD booting) and you go thorough a
multi-step INSTALL process…like this:
http://en.opensuse.org/INSTALL_Local

if you do not understand partitions and formatting of hard drives do a
LOT of reading and understanding BEFORE you start…and, backup ALL
your music, photo, etc etc etc on your computer BEFORE you attempt to
install…

more than one person has tried to install as if openSUSE were just
another game and too lated learned that all their stuff had
vanished…THAT, is not an openSUSE problem, it is a USER (you)
problem…Windows comes with training wheels, openSUSE is not a game
and does not have training wheels–YOU are allowed to remove all data
from your machine if you wish (or if you make a mistake)…

measure twice, cut once

-good luck-

Thank you for your long and detailed reply. I have read the information given by you in the links provided.
I have installed opensuse and have booted into opensuse when I got the error.
I had installed suse and ubuntu before and got no errors.

Thank you for the update. I have used Ubuntu before for a short while.

I have made an ISO file and done the checksums.

I have partitioned using Ubuntu and lost data , so know what it is . And also read documentation. Thanks for the info, though

This should read like this:-
I have downloaded the rpm package in Windows. Logged out and logged in to suse and did a one-time click .
Then I get this error.
Subprocess failed. Rpm failed warning./home/sonroy/Desktop wicd
I cannot get the image here.
