Accelerate shell output

Hello!

I installed openSuSE 11.2 on my server (no X-Windows, no GUI) and everything works fine except the scrolling. If I do “man dd” and use page up and down it is VERY SLOW. Is there a setting to change scrolling speed? Is it a problem of the graphics card/driver? Is it normal? Googeld for it 1 hour: nothing.

Best regards

How do you connect to that server? Is it a local system or remote?

What is the brand and model of the server? The VGA mode can affect scrolling, you may have to choose one that’s well supported by the video card.

Thx for help!

No remote, I use a normal keyboard
So wire speed shouldnt be a problem. BTW: Scrolling on my remote host in internet (different server) is fast as hell. And this is only a DSL connection.

I’m working on this vga mode thing…will report immediately…

Best regards

Please wait… im working on this…

Ok, ok, I’ll sit here and wait. But I want a report within 5 nanoseconds of when you find out!

VGA mode:

  • hwinfo --framebuffer to look for supported vga modes
  • tried out a few (1200, 1024, 640, …)
  • 640 is faster (not so fast as my remote connection but much faster)
  • Graphics card is AST1000/2000 (hwinfo told me)

Is it possible that a big resolution of 1200 points in TEXT MODE is to high for a modern graphics card? Means: there is nothing wrong/broken/missconfigured… the only problem is: my card is too slow? (unbelivable)

Best regards

I don’t fully understand it, but I gather that modern graphics cards are designed to be used in GUI mostly so VGA mode is simulated, so they don’t care how slow it is because Windows users don’t care.
