Dear all,
I want to configure VNC on my PC (openSUSE 11.4) so that I could control it remotely when I am at home from my laptop (windows xp). Now I am able to connect from my laptop to my PC, but the default desktop manager is TWM. I want to change it to gnome, then I edited the file xstartup in my home directory /home/flyspring/.vnc/xstartup by writing
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/gnome &
which is the same as the instruction shown in TightVNC (VNC Xvnc) on openSUSE as Client or Server (Remote Desktop Connections) .
But after I restart the VNC server on my PC again, I could not connect it anymore.
[flyspring@miner16 flyspring/temp/kk]$ dbus-launch vncserver
New 'X' desktop is miner16:2
Starting applications specified in /home/flyspring/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /home/flyspring/.vnc/minerva16:2.log
Then I checked the file /home/flyspring/.vnc/minerva16:2.log and find many error message. Anybody knows how to fix it? Thanks in advance.
Here is minerva16:2.log. Sorry for that it is a long file:

I don’t have a solution to all your problems, but I do have much the same problem. I’m running gnome on 11.4 (64 bit) and attach from an XP machine.
Specifically, I get this error in the log file:
Xlib: extension “RANDR” missing on display “:2”
I get this same error when I run YaST from the vnc window on the PC and whenever I start gedit (or many other programs) from a terminal command line.
I also remember getting the error you get on /etc/xdg/autostart/ksmolt-autostart.desktop … I edited this file and found that a strange character followed the word “condition”, prior to the = sign in one of the lines. I removed the strange character and this error went away.
But: I’m also getting key repeat errors sometimes. This never happens when typing commands in a terminal window, but does happen with gedit. Everything will be fine for a while and then I get 3 or 4 identical characters where only one was typed. This is a very frequent problem with a third party editor called ultraedit. It has made that program unusable in vnc yet it worked fine under 10.3 and it works without a problem when I run on the server’s attached monitor/keyword on 11.4. It seems there is a real problem. I tried fixing it with xset but even though that command had the intended effect (it change the repeat rate as specified), it did not fix the problem.
I ran openSUSE 10.3 for several years using the same basic set up (same PC and same vnc viewer) and never had a problem.

I see this using krdc from os 11.4 to other machines running various
versions of os from 11.1 thru 11.4. This is over a 1.5Mb DSL connection and
is very unpredictable. I don’t see the problem with an ssh or sftp
connection. I’m working trhu a forwarded port on the host end and the
problem has resolved to occuring much, much more frequently when the host or
another machine on the host’s router is doing active transfers so it may
have to do with the router saturating or some such nonsense. The repeating
keys also happen at times when there is no other network activity but there
is an obvious relationship here.
I haven’t had the misfortune of trying with a Windows client so I can’t
comment there but the repeating key problem does exist with an openSUSE
client and has for several versions.

Will: Thanks for your comments, but for the record, the connection is through a “small” local area network with modern switches (100 total ports or so) and again, everything is fine under 10.3. Was there a change in the vncserver software between suse 10+ and 11+. Now tightvnc is being used and I wonder if the problem is in that software. I wish I knew how to move forward in solving this!

I noticed one significant change somewhere between 11.1 and 11.2 or 11.3
that results in screwed up video color handling at higher rates/quality
settings in KRDC. All that’s usable for me now is the low quality/slow
network setting, even on 100mhz ehternet connections. That’s also where the
key dupping became really a PITA.

In addition to my liking the KDE4 and LXDE desktop, I also like the Gnome desktop. But one thing that has kept me away from using Gnome nominally (instead of KDE4) is my disastisfaction with VNC functionality on Gnome.
I do have openSUSE-11.4 KDE4 to 11.4 KDE4 (with VNC) working fine. And I have openSUSE-11.4 KDE4 to 11.4 LXDE working fine. Unfortunately for the terminal command line method I use (for connecting with a VNC session), Gnome does not work with VNC.
Hence given the OP notes their problem is on a Gnome desktop, I don’t have any advice here to offer. Hopefully one of our Gnome users who have this working will chime in with an answer.

The VNC problem with Gnome is also something that has vexed me for months. I have 11.4 64-bit with Gnome 2.32.1 running on a Linksys wireless router with four nodes on it. The XP laptop is wireless, while my Linux system is connected to a wired port. No router saturation here. Nothing fancy. Just the default installation. The main two icons for me that don’t seem to work are gnome-terminal from the desktop and Yast from the Computer->Yast system applications list. There are other apps, such as Evince that also will not work when trying to open a .pdf with a right click app selection. Gedit will only run when invoked from the CLI. I haven’t gotten far beyond this list of apps. I suspect the problem is all related. This problem is not just with VNC though. It displays the same behavior under TightVNC.
Gnome terminal spins and does nothing. I’ve tried right click Open, as well as Alt+F2. None of the three methods work. The only way I can get gnome-terminal to open is through the Computer->Gnome Terminal in the Applications list. Issuing a gnome-terminal command from the CLI will open another CLI window. I’ve spent months searching through log files and cannot seem to find anything that would indicate the problem. I also have received the RANDR error but must research more on this. The similar errors as the above posts show up in the .xsessions-errors file in my home directory.
Because of the issues with 11.3 and Gnome 2.30.x (IPv6, and the fixed version), I thought the issue could be IPv6. I’ve tried it with it enabled and disabled. No change.
Yast will prompt for the root password, but from there does nothing.
I’ve been researching this one on my own for months (trying to do it the right way), but am finally asking for assistance. I’m stumped and tired of running yast2 from the CLI and not being able to view .pdf’s while sitting in my livingroom with my laptop. My family thinks I’ve abandoned them because I spend too much time with the computers in the den trying to solve this one. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!!

Barring a solution to the problem with 2.32, what about installing 2.30 over the existing 2.32? Would this work, or would it require the existing 2.32 version to be removed first? At least I know 2.30 works, albeit under 11.3. Thoughts?
