About Snaps and VPN's on Tumbleweed

Hi.

I am about to install a VPN service on TW and there are two questions I’d like to ask.

  1. Is it OK to install VPN on TW? Does it work the way it should?
  2. The specific VPN I plan to use (Surfshark if it matters), provides a snap GUI application and it gives specific instructions on how to install both snapd and their app on TW. I’ve read that snaps should be avoided on distros other than *ubuntu. I don’t intend to start installing snaps. I am not a snap fan anyway. The VPN app is the only one so far that requires snap support. What’s your advice?

Thank you.

Sure, you can install a VPN on Tumbleweed. There’s no reason why it wouldn’t “work the way it should” - it’a network adapter, essentially.

You can use snaps on TW. I used to, but don’t at the moment.

My advice? Try it. If it works for you, great. If it doesn’t, you can always uninstall it.
