About glue

Hi,

I have a device (that runs some kind of Linux⁽¹⁾) with an infrared remote
control thing that has become faulty. The rubber buttons get humidity
inside, and the remote stops working, I have to press the buttons hard like
mad. I open the remote, dry out the humidity, close it, and it works… for
some time, till it gets humidity again.

This is known⁽²⁾, I have seen it reported on web sites. The recomendation
has been to glue inside of the buttons a little piece of aluminium paper,
the kind used on ktichens. It works.

The new problem is that the glue doesn’t stick the paper for long. I’m
using super glue-3. It peels off the aluminium. I have also tried Pattex
repair extreme, similar results, and pattex for rubber.

Anything better (glue)?

3M makes several versions of contact cement which do what you want. Biggest
issues are cleaning the surfaces and handling the prepared surfaces so
practice on something before you get into the remote with the glue. Alcohol
is usually a good clener here. Also, let it dry completely before re-
assembling as the fumes outgassed by the glue can be a problem.
