A strange problem with disc burning

Hi friends,
I have open suse 11.1 on my computer.I am using gnome environment.
I tried to burn a collection of *.avi files(Movies) to a dvd disc which has 4.7 Gb Capacity. But when i try to burn the files,Brasero shows that The DVD can contain only 3.8 GB of data…And when i try to do it in “K3b” the capacity shown is 4.4 Gb…I dont know why it is happening…Can any one hep me to solve this problem…

One more doubt…

When im trying to burn *.avi files…which format should i choose…

Video project or Data project…

Any help will be greatly appreciated…

Don’t know about brasero, but 4.7GB = 4.4 GiB. GiB = Gibibyte = 2^30 bytes, whereas GB = Gigabyte = 10^9 bytes. See for example:

It´s just a matter of space. A DVD is 4.7 GB, but will I be able to fit … - Mac Forums

Any other views

Well in “K3b” The dvd disc capacity is shown as 4.4 Gb and not as 4.4 Gib as u told…

i just love it when folks come here, ask a question, don’t like the
answer and then wanna switch from questioner to expert and say:
“well . . .”

‘chintalvaady’, did you actually READ the cite given to you?

but, i’d like to know: what is your actual question? is it:

  1. Why do Brasero and K3b show different capacities for the same empty
disk? [the answer to that one is that the two programs are different
    in capability: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brasero_(software)]

or

  1. How much stuff can i burn on to a blank DVD that comes out of a box
marked “4.7GB” in HUGE type face? [the answer to that one you can find
here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD#DVD_capacity as well as in the
    cite ‘key yap’ gave]
