A stop job is running for user manager for uid 1000

For years now I (and other people) am being pestered with a very long shutdown (or reboot) time.
It doesn’t happen all the time, I guess one out of three times this phenomenon happens.
The problem has been reported by many people but it seems very difficult to catch the root cause.
The problem is either related to systemd and/or the kernel (it’s not distro specific).
I have tried some possible solutions like editing /etc/systemd/system.conf and setting DefaultTimeoutStopSec to 20 sec
but that doesn’t help either.
So, what I do now is to logout first, and then shutdown. For the moment ths seems to help.

No trouble shooting for that.
Just try logout first when prompted, choose logout after you are logout do shutdown.
I found it shutdown without the long wait here.

@Teuniz:

Take a look in ‘/etc/systemd/logind.conf’ –

  • The parameters of interest are: “KillUserProcesses
    ”, “KillOnlyUsers” and “KillExcludeUsers”.

Please be aware that, this solution only works about 99.8 % of the time but, it does help somewhat …

For a fast exit use ctrl+alt+backspace and shut down from the login screen.

I’ve converted at least 50 installations of various distros, of which openSUSE represents greatest number, from 90s in that line to 7s. My notice of reboot/shutdown delays has been considerably reduced since my process of reduction began. IME, most such delays were happening because some Xsession app or component was refusing to exit, user manager among them, causing the DM to wait.

Expected behavior:

**erlangen:~ #**

Shutdown time: 69540.27 - 69539.08 = 1.19 seconds. If shutdown times out, leave display manager and retry.

Is that on TW, or 15.4?

# journalctl -b -1 -u init.scope -g Stopped --no-hostname -o short-monotonic --no-pager | wc -l
151
#

Apparently lots more to stop here on 15.4, and 5.9072 seconds to do so, including 6 rotating rust RAID device shutdowns, and / on SATA SSD.

On this Leap 15.4 system, the shutdown times include –

  • About 1½ seconds for the Firewall Daemon to shut down after the Network has been shut down.
  • About 6 seconds for the Wicked Network Management Service Daemon to shut down after the Name Service Cache Daemon shuts down.
  • The Name Service Cache Daemon needs less than a tenth of second to shut down.

Therefore, using Wicked as the Network Management Service does mean that more time is needed to boot and to shut down, at least for the configuration I’m using …

Your mileage may vary …

In my case that didn’t help.

Show your configuration:

**erlangen:~ #** localectl
   System Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
       VC Keymap: de-nodeadkeys
      X11 Layout: de
       X11 Model: pc105
     X11 Variant: nodeadkeys
** X11 Options: terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp **
**erlangen:~ #**

With the above settings pressing ctrl+alt+backspace TWICE readily terminates the graphical session.

Sorry, I meant that the graphical session terminated but there was still the message “A stop job is running for user manager for uid 1000 etc.”.

> localectl
   System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8
       VC Keymap: us
      X11 Layout: us

As the OP states in the first post “A stop job is running for…” is a “bug” which has been around in various incarnations for several years.

I’m firmly of the opinion there is no single cause or solution.

Finding the cause and a solution (if that is possible) for system “A” doesn’t necessarily mean the cause and solution on system “B” is the same.

I’ve seen it occasionally on all of my openSUSE systems, it’s irritating when it happens, but hey, that’s life :)…

A rather sweeping generalisation (at least for my own systems) is TW seems better at not exhibiting the behaviour, and Leap 15.4 is better than 15.3

**Systemd message "A stop job is running for … " is not a bug. It is expected behavior.

Termination of a unit is governed by killmode: systemd.kill If killing of a service times out the service will be terminated. This mechanism works reliably, but may cause a wait, see JobTimeout https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.unit.html

Shortening the timeout doesn’t fix the issue. Users may want to identify the rogue process and reconfigure the application causing the issue:

Did you not note the quotation marks I used around the word bug?

And as I wrote:

"*I’m firmly of the opinion there is no single cause or solution.

Finding the cause and a solution (if that is possible) for system “A” doesn’t necessarily mean the cause and solution on system “B” is the same.*"

I don’t disagree on post #13, but I felt compelled to make my own comment on “A stop job is running for…”.

For quiet some time now, this is the only workaround that actually works (and is acceptable) on all of my three Leap boxes.
When selecting imediately “Shut Down” it always hangs for a couple of minutes.
When selecting “Log Out” and wait a couple of seconds and then select “Shut Down”, it always works as intended (no delay).

Weird…

Weird: Journal tells all, but users refrain from using it:
