This all started when I read about the bash script bug and decided I really should update more…
Anyway, I start with Laptop, OpenSuse 12.2. I think. No update I could find so I thought I’d put 13.1 on as an upgrade. Anyway, that all went horribly wrong and I wound up with what seemed to be a mishmash of the two versions and a completely unstable system. I gave up and reinstalled 13.1 only to find that somewhere along the line the 1200x800 resolution I’d given earlier in the process got changed to (I guess 640x400) and in KDE after the install, I couldn’t see what I was doing as boxes went beyond the bottom of the screen. In fairness, it’s Via Chrome 9 is not the easiest and I’ve had to change it to use vesa drivers before (within my patience) I could not find a way round this one. In anger, I installed Fedora 20 on it and it works fine.
Anyway that’s just a side issue. Yesterday, I decided to update my multipurpose server box (12.3). After rebooting, I noticed I was still on the old kernel (uname -a) nothing new there btw… my (13.1) desktop hangs when grub2 updates and I eventually reverted to the older grub as a resolution…
This one has an efi boot, so not so simple. Anyway, having no interest in the finer points (I don’t mind spending time setting things up once and finding out how, am willing even to write a few lines of code, eg http://mobd.jonbanjo.com/jfcupsprintservice/setup.php I wrote this for my android, but once set up, I just want things to work and derive no joy from meddling with systems), I thought I had a brain wave. If I asked Yast software management to update thegrub bits, it might just get the bootloader right.
It did and it didn’t. The .40 version did come up as default but the system became unbootable waiting on what, on reading, was something to do with fakeraid.
Unperturbed at that point I decided to upgrade it to 13.1
Lo and behold, this did give me a bootable system but I’ve got loads of problems with it.
I’ve not looked at this one yet but it’s decided to put the screen in a smaller box. It connects to the living room tv and as well as server tasks is mythtv frontend. The update of OS has produced a sort of black margin say 1 or 2 inch wide.
I have got Apache to start again…
I have solved some mail problems (mostly amavis not set to start and the emails to Cyrus winding up in a black hole) but I now find that while I can login with Thunderbird, my parent’s logins no longer work. Also there seemed to be some permission problems (eg mail jon) with maildrop - postfix check gave some errors.
Mythtv has become some bizare mix of bits (eventually) seeming to read the database and other bits not (eg. setup shows no capture cards but the web page shows them as
there but not connected).

Anyway as I type I’m wondering (especially as a failure to update grub correctly triggere this) where the quality control is, I’m doing this at the same time as realising that I’m only a user, throwing a lot of different tasks on one box, realising it’s free, have been in a position where between circumstances (mostly my 2 android apps suddenly got a run of negative reviews at one of my times when I was having severe problems with alcohol so I know what it is like to feel stressed with trying to put something out for free - something btw I only tried as open source has done a lot for me) where is the quality control?
But what’s going on and, especially, how might I resolve the cyrus one?
