A question on use of os-update and implications for running processes

I am running openSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE desktop and Wayland display manager.
I have set up a daily run of os-update to run in the middle of the night and this has been working well and has managed the reboots when required, usually without a hitch.

Unfortunately last night it appears that a reboot was required which failed correctly to complete and left me with a black screen. To recover required a hard switch reset which required intervention by a person at the machine. I am working remotely so had to ask for help.

I have several NFS shares on the machine and these have never caused any problems with os-updates although there are delays if one of the shared machines happens to be down, but last night I had been running an rsync copy session which clearly was interrupted by the timed os-update and may have been to cause of the failed auto reboot after the os-update.

What is the correct way to manage this situation so that either an auto os-update is delayed until the other processes have completed or there is an orderly pause of such a process, given that I am working remotely.

I think there is no magical solution in having os-update check if the system is idle but solution is to make sure rsync is simply not running.

The actual problem is the hang I think that should not happen even if rsync is active.
