A problem with File Roller

On Windows, using Winrar, I have done the updating zip stuff before: deleting a single file from within the zip, and dragging (adding) files to it. Curiously I have experienced trouble when trying to directly replace a file with the same name, it gets freezed or never finishes. If I want to replace a file I must first delete it and then drag the new one.

But the point is, I tried the same stuff on File Roller with a zip file as well, but when trying to add a file all I get is a message saying “an error occurred while trying to update file”, or something like that. However, if I modify an existent file it gets updated successfully.

Any idea about why isn’t it working?
Thanks.

I am not seeing any issues with file roller while delete, dragging and dropping etc…
you should probably launch it from terminal and check the errors

Guess I need to start from the beginning then.

I downloaded this zip file (yes, I’m a bit into smartphone stuff).
Then I did my tests. On the the zip file’s root directory I can indeed drop files inside (adding), and even overwrite them if the have the same name. When I go into the subdirectories (anywhere inside META-INF or System in my example), I can modify files and the overall zip gets updated, delete files, but when trying to drop (add) files I get “An error occurred while adding files to the archive”, and this on the console:

** (file-roller:3791): WARNING **: Error making symbolic link: File exists

I tried dropping random files of mine, so the files obviously don’t already exist inside the zip. And I don’t know what else to say…

Any help?

That is a installation image. You cannot probably edit it

Then why am I able to edit it on Windows using Winrar?

Still anyone?

Before better creating a new thread, seeing as this one was left abandoned, I did another test: trying with other zip files, and even creating one myself. Result: S A M E ! !
I can add files only to the zip’s root directory, but any other location inside it, any other subdirectories, give the same ***** error mentioned above. WTH??

Let me try peazip PeaZip | Free Zip files utility, free Rar files extractor

I am able to successfully insert into subdirectories using http://software.opensuse.org/package/xarchiver
1 click install for 12.3
http://software.opensuse.org/ymp/X11:lxde/openSUSE_12.3/xarchiver.ymp?base=openSUSE%3A12.3&query=xarchiver

I appreciate your advise, but weren’t we talking about a File Roller issue? Have you done the same tests on it?

Besides, though I don’t doubt other archivers have no problems, I intend to adapt myself to default Gnome software, unless really necessary to change…

There seems to be some issue with File roller. you should report a bug. xarchiver is a gtk tool hence it integrates well with gnome

+1

and, once that has been done please return the URL/bug number to this
thread…

So are you also getting this issue with File Roller?

If so, tell me how to submit a bug report (never done this before) and I may probably do it…

you can contact the software author through this page and confirm whether it is really a bug before reporting it. There is also a link to bugzilla page.
