Following the advice of our friend and top guru Caf, I downloaded and made a liveCD of PartedMagic 4.5 (which is brilliant btw).
On my PC I have to tell it to nomodeset/failsafe etc… NP
But when I got it running it was fine re. doing its job. Whilst it was repartitioning and moving stuff about I decided to explore its capabilities so I asked it connect. It crashed!
I took the same CD and WiFi USB card to my family PC downstairs, and it booted unattended (no messing with options re vesa or X etc, despite having precisely the same on-board graphics chipset)
And when I asked it to connect, it found the same WiFi USB card and connected it NP.
How could this be?
Let me apologise for my gormless question:
But is this question about Parted Magic and why it would crash whilst attempting to connect to wireless on one machine, but not on another.
And the two machines are identical? Or is it only the graphics that are identical?
The two machines are not identical, but are booting from the same CD, they both, coincidentally have on board nVidia 6150se graphics. And, not coincidentally, are using the same USB WiFi NIC ('cos I took it downstairs and plugged it in)
Surely only the CPU and BIOS are significantly different here?
ps
Caf = gormless?
Never.
Silly question probably.
You say:
Whilst it was repartitioning and moving stuff about I decided to explore its capabilities so I asked it connect. It crashed!
I take it you also tried whilst not engaged in such a process?
I’m not sure that having the same graphics chip alone constitutes such a similarity of hardware, that we could draw the conclusion you are suggesting.
I have tried it whilst not busy doing re-parting stuff, same response, (not crashing, but “not found”)
Where you go from here: I guess it depends how important it is for you to fix this?
Sorry Caf disconnected this AM and gave up. re. the parted magic, it is not important of course, that’s why I posted it under chit-chat, but it IS a mystery!
Differences in BIOS settings, like ACPI or legacy USB?
Could be, Bruno. I was wondering whether the fact that I have to use some failsafe type options to boot it on my PC might also disable some kernel features related to my wireless NIC
