A few XFCE issues

I recently movied my main desktop OS from Windows 7 to openSUSE. I’ve been using LXDE since GNOME 3 launched, but it’s always been in a virtual machine on a Windows host. I tried to customize the panel at the bottom of the screen to add some of the things that I had in Windows and got very frustrated. I decided to try MATE since I’d used GNOME 2 for years before LXDE. I installed it, but it just looked old and dated, so I installed Xfce.

I love Xfce, but with all of these software changes, I’ve developed a few problems. First, I don’t have any sound. I had sound in LXDE and realized at some point while using MATE that I no longer did. The volume icon in LXDE has an ‘x’ next to it and says “no device and/or element” when I move the mouse over it. I am guessing that I don’t have any sound daemon running, but I don’t know which one I should be using.

Second, when I try to run “Software Manager” under the Yast gui, everything loads, and then I get an error box labeled “UI Syntax Error.” It reads “Couldn’t load plug-in gtk-pkg. Check the log file!” When I click “Close,” Software Manager closes as well. The log file is massive, BTW. It wasn’t helpful to me. Luckily, zypper and the ncurses version of Yast/Software Manager are both working.

Third, whenever I run Yast or the Software Manager, I get a small window labeled “xdg-su” which shows me what is happen on the command line (i.e. behind the scenes). These boxes never close on their own, and a new one opens every time I run one of these apps. There might be more apps opening these, but Yast and Software Manager are the ones that I am sure of.

I updated my computer from openSUSE 13.1 to Tumbleweed earlier today. I was hoping that updating everything would fix at least some of my issues. It didn’t, but I like being on a rolling release, so I am happy to be on Tumbleweed.

I would appreciate any advice I can get on fixing all of this stuff.

Thank you!

I assume that you are doing it in real hardware now, not as a virtual guest.

Well first thing would be to try sound in YaST.

It’s preferable a single question per thread, but let’s try.

Maybe libyui-gtk-pkg5 is missing or wrong version.

Uh-oh…
Sorry, but then I must suggest you request a moderator to move your
thread to the tumbleweed forum. Just click on the triangle report button
below. Tumbleweed has specific issues.

You’ve been immensely helpful, Carlos. First, the sound issue was me being dense. Master was on 100 but PCM was on 0. That’s fixed. http://aggiehardball.com/forum/Smileys/default/picardicon.gif
Second, ‘sudo zypper install libyui-gtk-pkg5’ fixed my Yast/Software Manager problem.

My only remaining question is why these little “yast windows” keep popping up. Oh, but they do go away on their own when I close the application that launched them. When I launch Yast, I authenticate in one of these. When I launch Software Manager, this one pops up.

Thanks again for your help, Carlos!
