a dummie's boot problems with windows 7

hi.i recently installed opensuse 11.2 from a dvd iso image i downloaded from the net over my existing dual-boot win7-ubuntu machine.i thought that there would be a triple-boot windows menu that will show windows7-ubuntu and opensuse in the windows boot menu and which would enable me to choose which os i want to choose from to start with…but when i installed opensuse 11.2 i saw that opensuse created its own bootmenu.i see five entries on the grub menu:opensuse-failsafe opensuse-windows1-windows2 and diskette.but when i choose windows 1 or windows 2 it windows 7 does not boot up instead the system asks me to insert a CD1 which i do not know what it is.And if i insert opensuse dvd it again tries to install opensuse. As you can understand i am a pretty novice linux user i just used ubuntu for some time…Can you explain me how i can boot from windows7 and use windows7…You may laugh but i cannot even boot my windows7 and cannot use them…in opensuse when i look at the disk’s contents i can see computer retains all the data but i cannot boot windows7!!!help will be greatly appreciated

i hope this will help.

You need to edit the menu. Which looks like someone has been messing with it anyway!!

Edit and replace with this:

default 0
timeout 8
gfxmenu (hd0,5)/boot/message

Edit by entering this in a terminal

gnomesu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst (if using gnome)

kdesu kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst (if using kde)

And be careful to get it right!!!

Reboot and try windows option

i did exactly what you told me to do.Now when i boot up i see three entries in the boot-up menu:opensuse, failsafe and windows. But still when i want to boot up windows the linux system wants me to insert CD1 instead of booting up windows7…i do not have any idea what this CD1 is…I only have opensuse installation dvd which i burned from opensuse iso image. And when i insert this dvd it tries to install opensuse again.Someone who is knowledgeable please help i do not have any idea how i can use windows 7 anymore…All the files exist in the disk i just cannot boot up windows 7…

OK.
When you installed openSUSE, did you run the installer from within Windows?

yes i used the installer within windows…i just put the dvd in the dvd-drive and booted up the computer from the dvd…and the opensuse installation started…and it just installed it with no problems…

It’s not the way to do it.

Hang on I’m looking for a thread I come back

Assume this is directed at YOU.
Where you read Vista - see it as Win7 (they are one and the same)

it’s complicated, (you messed up) But completely fixable! Read and read and read again

Update from Suse 11.0 to 11.1 - Page 2 - openSUSE Forums

thank you for all your help.but nothing worked.i read the instructions which you forwarded me but i couldnt repair my system.so i had to format all my harddrive and had to install win7 from the scratch.maybe i will try loading opensuse later on.what puzzled me most was that i complied with the instructions explained on the opensuse website.but you told me installing from the windows was not the right way.so what went wrong and what should i have done to prevent this problem.i will be happy if you explain to me how i should install opensuse 11.2 in my windows7 computer so that i can use them both side by side with a dual-boot?thanks in advance.

You must boot from the install DVD NOT run it in windows. To do this insert the dvd and reboot your machine. Here is a slide show of how it goes

thank you for your help.but there is a problem.the documentation that i looked tells the users to install opensuse if there is no linux os in their machines or if they want to change the linux distribution…now i have 2 os in my system (win7 and ubuntu) i know im being greedy but do you think can my system run 3 os (win7,ubuntu and opensuse)which i can select when the computer starts?i have 160 gb harddisk and 3 gb ram and dual core intel pentium cpu if you wonder…

Yes it could, but do you think, considering how new you are to this, you might want to see how you get on with the setup you have?

It would go something like this Eg;

win7 60GB
Extended 100GB - containing the following:
Ubu 50GB (swap 2GB) (/ 20GB) (/home 28GB)
SUSE 50GB (/ 20GB) (/home 30GB)

Things to note:
*Ubuntu doesn’t give you a separate /home by default
*SUSE can share the swap with Ubuntu
*Ubuntu uses Grub2

thank you for all your advice.i installed opensuse along with windows and ubuntu at last.now i am trying to get acquainted with it.there seems to be a small problem.i cant play my music files…what should i do to ?do i have to install additional mp3 plug-ins?in ubuntu it automatically downloads them from the net.

Follow this carefully!!

cat i need your help this time with the installation of kde desktop alongside gnome desktop.online documents told me it was as simple as going to software manager choosing kde and right-click and download but after i installed it and did as was explained to change the desktop by logging out and logging in kde desktop doesnt show instead of that a warning message comes …in my next post ill tell you what this warning message is:take care.

ok…the bootup takes longer than usual and the warning message is:’‘could not update ICE authority file /var/lib/gdm ICE authority’’ is there any way to solve this hassle?thanks in advance.

To install kde you should have gone to Software Management - Filter by Patterns
and check : kde4-base, kde4-desktop
