Desktop Folder
> And how do I get it back?
-right click on desktop
-pick “Unlock Widgets” if it is locked
-right click on desktop
-pick “Add Widgets”
-search for the “Folder View” widget
-click to select the “Folder View” widget to be added (back)
-right click on desktop
-pick “Lock Widgets” and normally run with the widgets locked (helps
insure you don’t accidentally delete good stuff)
It is a widget. It’s called ‘Folder View’ and it shows the contents of one folder (you can select which one). You can add more widgets by right clicking on the desktop and selecting ‘Add Widgets…’ (you might have to click on ‘Unlock Widgets’ first if you see it on the right click menu).
The original setup of the KDE desktop does NOT display the contents of the Desktop folder like other desktops, like for example Windows or MacOS. This widget can be used for this functionality. Note you can have this widget multiple times on your desktop, displaying simultaneously the contents of a few different folders. Pretty cool, eh ?
If you want the traditional Windows desktop behavior, you can right click on the desktop again, and select ‘Activities…’, and then choose the ‘Desktop Icons’ activity.
Thank you both. very helpful.
However (isn’t there always!), I still have a couple of “features” that puzzle me.
My newly created “Folder View Widget”, is a little bit truculent, in that the icons won’t stay where I put them. For example:
I right-click within the folder outline or hover at the left/right edge until the menu appears and select the spanner,
I then select “Display” and sorting as “Unsorted”. Uncheck “Lock in place”,
Then move the icons around to suit my preference. But as soon as I close the Folder View Setting, all the icons return to their default locations?
It is as if I do not have permissions to the config file (wherever that is)? But on opening the Folder View Setting again, the “Sorting” and “Lock” parameters are how I set them.
Any thoughts…

If I get this correctly, you open up the ‘Settings’ dialog, do your choices, then you move the icons, and THEN you click on OK ?
If true, try clicking OK and then move your icons where you want.
If you open up the ‘Settings’ dialog, do the previous choices persist or reset ?
Thank you both for your advice - and yes, I think “magic” was involved. I also suspect a bit of “finger trouble”!
Anyway, I have got around the problem by upgrading to 12.2.
Oh, and apologies for the delay, in responding. Been away for a few days.
