I have used a Linux system as my main desktop since about 2001, first with WindowMaker, then KDE. I did not mind the early releases of KDE 4, but I hated the later 4.x releases that forced a completely unfinished Akonadi and Nepomuk upon me. At the same time, Windows 7 came along, which is actually a really good OS (unlike the quite good Vista, and the utterly execrable Windows XP). Then, Gnome committed suicide, and Ubuntu … well, what can I say?
Now, up pops KDE 4.8 and the Linux desktop world has suddenly become a much better place to be. Like Vista, KDE 4.7 was quite good, but lacking refinement. Like Windows 7, KDE 4.8 is not really much different to its predecessor, but my goodness, it is just so much better to use.
A KDE 4.8 respin of OpenSuSE 12.1 could really be something special. Kubuntu people can easily get 4.8. OpenSuSE 12.1 users can get it with quite a bit more hassle. I think that a KDE 4.8 respin of OpenSuSE 12.1 could placate all those people that dislike Unity and Gnome 3, and think that the half-baked Mint offering is just not up to the job. Send a KDE 4.8 respin of OpenSuSE 12.1 on a DVD to Linus!
I am now using KDE 4.8 in all my 12.1 systems, but I do not know how to turn this into a respin. I would if I could! If someone could send me instructions as to how to, I will!
It has been a long time since I have been really pleased with a new release of a Linux desktop environment. KDE 4.8, for me, is a once-in-a-blue-moon event in terms of its general goodness.
This is such a good opportunity to let people know about what a desktop Linux system has to offer.

great idea!!
but i don’t think the devs have time to do a respin, i mean it is only a
few days until openSUSE 12.2 Milestone 1 and will be on the streets
(first available here: http://software.opensuse.org/developer/) for testing on or about 9 February
i’d guess that the pace set up won’t include extra time to do a
respin…so, you might want to have a look around SUSE Studio and make
one for yourself…you can even make it available to others…
I’m not necessarily a windows hater, but again…when you say that “windows 7 is actually a really good OS”, it depends on what you expect from an OS to offer. I guess you’re referring to GUI. Yes, it is good. But I still prefer Gnome 3 over windows’ GUI, because it is highly customizable. I also like the idea of KDE 4.8 respin.
In the past we had the KDE-Reloaded LiveCD’s. They were buit on openSUSE# + Updates + latest KDE. Something like that would be good, yes. Use openSUSE Studio and create one

Yes, W7 is good. And XP was good, judging by the thousands of users that
still use it refusing to upgrade.
However, that’s not related to Linux. It will not stop us from using Linux.

What do you mean, publish a new ISO of 12.1? Not going to happen, at least
not an official one. Dream on! :-p

Never. My dislike of Gnome 3 will not ever turn me to KDE, no matter how
good it becomes.

Why is there no love for kde? Why?

Windows, supports nearly all software, hardware, and viruses.

Not any more, add the KDE4.8 upstream repos, disable any other KDE extra repo, refresh & do zypper dup. openSUSE branding issue had been resolved now as well.

You mean the login screen? I actually liked it. Brought me back to the
90s.

if you were using applications from KDE/Extra or KDE/Unstable:/Playground
before, you’ll have to change those to their respective 4.8 versions and
enable them, too. otherwise you’ll have to uninstall those app.s during
the upgrade.

Well that true. But i love ma more

Anyhow going back to the topic. Won’t it be possible to add KDE 4.8 using some custom repository like for example KDE 4.7 repo for openSUSE 11.4 which works great IMHO ?
@the OP: can you maybe give a short overview, on what is better in KDE 4.8 than in KDE 4.7? I mean, I agree, when you say that 4.7 was not really a corker. In fact it was bad… But lets look forward: what is better in 4.8? Less bugs? KDEPIM working?
The reason for my questions is that I want to know whether it is reasonable to do the extra work or if it is better just to stay with 4.7 until openSUSE 12.2 comes out…

i sure hope not!
not because i would likely get hurt but there are thousands of users who
pay no attention whatsoever to what is being offered in online
updates…and, we all know (don’t we) that sometimes updates hose systems…
