I am trying to get 64bit OpenSUSE installed on my AMD based system. I have the gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 mobo and the Phenom 9600 black with a Radeon HD3870X2. The system just hangs at initializing udev no matter which menu option I select. I did verify my md5 checksum from the downloaded DVD. I have 4 hard drives which are all SATA and the first 2, which I plan to boot off, are in RAID0 and the other 2 are RAID 1. I have also tried the network based mini iso with no luck but it appeared to go farther along. I run SLED10 on all my other boxes and had no played with open for a while (since 9.1) but thought I would give it a whirl. Any suggestions?
See if it will boot a LiveCD & eliminate the raid arrays as a problem.
I haven’t done a raid array in 11.0; but, since about V10.1 openSUSE has been able to boot & install BIOS raid. I did a raid0 with nvraid with no problems and updates to 10.3 saw the raid array.
I would pull the cables on the raid1 drives and see if it will pickup the bios raid0; you can then put back the raid1 drives and edit the menu.lst.
It may not see your HHD controller (one or the other if they are on different controllers say like nvraid & jmicronraid); there’s a process at the beginning of the install for adding needed drivers

Thanks for the suggestions. I took all the suggestions to heart and tested live discs of a few different 64 bit distros. I took it down to a single active HDD with no RAID active. 32bit of every distro works fine but 64 bit will not work with any of them. The RAID seems to be based on the AMD SB600 which has been around for a while even though the 790FX chipset is somewhat newer. I have tried in vein to find 64 bit drivers of any form for either of the SATA RAID controllers.
