640X480 Screen

I have a problem with my screen resolution.
I can get nothing higher than 640X480.
I have had Opensuse 11.4 installed for a while now (from a fresh install) and it has been working without any problems. But tonight, all I can get is a max resolution of 640X480.
I have tried rebooting… no change. The splash screen when booting is normal, but the login screen and after is low rez.
teh output of xrandr is

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

I have tried

 cvt 1680 1050

in the terminal,
but that didn’t do anything
I also copy/pasted the output of cvt 1680 1050 into the “50-monitor.conf” file.

What am I doing wrong here? I did install a few updates between working and not working. They were the “bootsplash, openvpn and yast2-control-center” updates.

My system is OpenSuse 11.4_64
KDE 4.6.0 release 6
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS
NVIDIA 260.19.44 driver.

I have looked at the nvidia x server settings. It also has the highest resolution as 640x480.

Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

OpenSuse 11.4 or CloseSuse 11.4? Simply not working with my monitor. I am writing this comment using Xubuntu, a smarter mice, not doubt about it.

Why releasing a new version of Opensuse without even testing it?

No more comments…

Is there a way to roll back the last lot of updates to see if they are the problem?

The update history is at the end of this file

/var/log/zypp/history

I’m at work, so I can’t check my computer at the moment. Will I be able to reinstall the older versions of the files that were updated?
Will this have to be done manually or is there a way to automatically reinstall the previous versions?

I’m using the digital input on the monitor, would it be worth trying the VGA?
Thanks

You can usually install the older version. But I suspect this is not the problem. By all means get the list of packages that you think are involved, everything there is dated, so the last changes are right at the end of the file.

The graphics card you have should not even need any config files, I never do anything but install the driver like this
nVidia Driver via Repo in 11.3 & 11.4 - Guide

I’d be interested to know if the boot options at the grub boot menu has changed?

What should the boot option be?
I have had it boot into text mode by typing 3 (I think) when grub boots. Is there an option for a higher resolution?

No you are reading me wrong. I was suspecting that a new kernel had been dragged in with some of your updates/package installs. I have seen before where a new install starts life from kernel-desktop, the user starts installing all and sundry and a new kernel like kernel-default is added and takes priority. Only trouble is, the graphics driver is installed to kernel-desktop. (Are you following)

So what I mean is, are there more boot options in the menu, not have the kernel arguments changed.

The vga entry in my kernel arguments is: vga=0x31a, I have nomodeset added as well of course

Ahh, O.k. Would reinstalling the graphics driver again help?
(I’m trying to follow)

I’m just about to go home, I’ll have a look at the boot menu. I don’t think there are any new entries.
I’ll post back soon.

If there are no new entries then I would look at the install history, it may tell you something.
But if you have added any xorg config files I would remove them
Check the /boot/grub/menu.lst has not been modified from your original working file
Check your settings against my guide quoted in post #6

Have a look at the messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any clues about what might be occurring.

I am about to start caf4926’s guide.
Just for kicks when grub loaded I changed the vga mode to 0x317 (same as my laptop) and it booted with a screen res of 1024x768. Is there a clue in this?

This might be a silly question, but how do I check to see if /boot/grub/menu.lst has been modified from the original file?

I changed the vga mode to 0x317 in Safe Mode to get the 1024x768 res. It is also using the fbdev 2d driver.
Changing the vga mode in normal mode makes no difference. Sorry, my mistake.

I have rebooted after following caf4926’s guide, unfortunately nothing has changed.
I find it a bit odd that all had been working until last night.
The splash screen is fine up until the login, and is fine again on shut down.
Is there anyway to get the computer to redo the video setting. When I have had problems with plasma in the past, I just delete the plas* config. files and reboot. I’m just wondering if I can do a similar thing here.

This sort of thing doesn’t just randomly happen. It never does with me.
You should revert back by removing any config files you have setup, if this is the case.
A new install and with the nvidia driver added as I guide above, does not produce any config files.

The only file that I have knowingly modified (xorg.conf.d) has been put back to original. Still the same…
I’m stumped now…

The only file I knowingly modified was xorg.conf.d, but it’s back to normal now.
Here is the output of /var/log/zypp/

I’m on another computer at the moment. I’ve had a late night stuff-up. When I get mine up and running, I’ll be back. Thanks so much for the help so far.

There are other old threads here (if you search), that discuss workarounds for this type of problem, when using the nvidia driver. (It might also be worth using nvidia-xconfig to create a basic xorg.conf. Then use the nvidia-settings utility to manually enter the desired display mode).
