64 bit on 32 bit oddity

Q.What happens if you boot a _64 bit live CD on a 32 bit machine?
a. I know, but do you

Q. What happened when I dd’ a _64 bit CD .iso to a flash drive and booted it on a 32 bit machine?

a. I’ll tell you. It boots and works fine.:open_mouth:

What’s the crack here then?:stuck_out_tongue:

Your “32-bit” CPU probably is already 64-bit capable. Do a grep -w lm /proc/cpuinfo and if you get any output, it is.

Point I was making. The CD says, NO GO this _64 cannot be used on …blah…

grep -w lm /proc/cpuinfo
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss tm pbe nx lm constant_tsc up arch_perfmon pebs bts pni dtes64 monitor ds_cpl tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr pdcm lahf_lm

Haha… Notice the title. It’ll read “Cool software… But…”

“Cool software… But…”

Haha yup.

64 bit can boot on 32bit?..i am not sure.
I tried 32 and 64, but 64 bit never work on 32bit.
So what’s crack then?
The case is reverse here, 32bit can boot on 64bit but never heard about the 64 on 32.

Nope it clearly won’t work. You can try it up in VirtualBox yourself if not convinced.

Hence my post:

I boot the _64 Live CD and it’s rejected at boot because my laptop is 32bit.

I dd’ the image to make a bootable usb pen drive
Boot from it and…It boots!! Very odd.

I tell you what too, the speed of the live session on a usb device is incredible.

I’m running it now on my 32 bit laptop and here is a screen of sysinfo

Exactly, the CPU can handle 64-bit instructions as lm is one of the flags. The question is why did the CD say no go? Perhaps the check wasn’t as thorough as it should be.

Exactly my point! Very odd if you ask me.

Well if you want some more fame, you could file a bugzilla report.

More Fame??
Do you mean forum ‘rep’? Funny!
With all the bugs we report, our little green lights will be off the screen.

It might be worth reporting though. I was wondering what would happen if I ran the installer.

Caf,
Let us know should be interesting.
Maybe your laptop is a 64bit wannabe.rotfl!

Hey, You had me confused there. Anyway I like the New Look Pussie;)

It will indeed be interesting…
