64 Bit installation prblem on IBM server

Good Morning,

i’ve got my fingers on an used Server “IBM eServer xSeries 235” with twoway Xeon and 6 GB RAM, equipped with a IBM-ServeRaid, HDD’s and on.

This machine worked long time under Windows Server and was now replaced with somewaht bigger.

I tried OpenSUSE 11.1 - 32 Bit, this worked fine including Xen and more.

When installing OpenSUSE 11.1 - 64 Bit i get a message “This is a 32-Bit System, you can not install 64-Bit Software…”

I checked with other Distros, same result.

This server may be equipped with up to 12 GB RAM, so it should be a 64-bit system.

What am i dowing wrong?

Greetings
Shardan

Not necessarily.
Lots of 32 bit systems are sold with far more RAM capability than they can make use of in Windows.
However, a 32 bit Linux system can use it with the PAE kernel, which will likely install by default anyway.

Well, some windows 32 bits releases are capable to handle more than 16 GB of
RAM
